It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Craig Fraser; beloved
husband, father, and friend. He passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the
age of 78, in the comfort of his home in Parksville, B.C., on Vancouver Island, in
the loving company of his wife Brenda and daughter Jessica.
Craig was born in Calgary on February 2, 1947, where he spent the majority of
his years until he and Brenda moved to Vancouver Island in November of 2020 to
be closer to Jessica and enjoy a warmer climate.
After earning 2 Education degrees from the University of Calgary, Craig started
his career as a dedicated Junior High and High School teacher with the Calgary
Board of Education. He went on to be a guidance counselor from 1974 until his
retirement in June of 2006. He took pride in his work and was admired and
respected by his fellow teachers and students.
His Scottish ancestry captivated Craig, and he cherished all the books, stories,
and information that he could find about the Highland Frasers of Lovat. He and
his family travelled to Scotland twice, and once attended a Fraser Clan
Gathering, which was immensely meaningful to him. Craig himself was an
enthusiastic and talented storyteller and writer. He delighted in creating whimsical, fantastic, and
mythical tales featuring his close and extended family.
Craig is predeceased by his mother, Jean Lillian (Strang) Fraser, his father, Dr.
William Ronald Fraser, his younger sister Margaret Fraser, and his nephew Jim
(Jamie) Cartwright.
Craig will be missed by his sister Ann (Harvey) Mickenberg, his niece Shannon
(Lorne) Popowich, his nephews, Craig Cartwright (Lori) (son Jesse and daughter
Hayley), Steve (Kate) Cartwright (daughters Kennedy and Claire). They all
lovingly referred to him as “Uncle”. He will be missed by (Margaret’s children) his
niece, Celia (Chris) Brogan, his great niece Ophelia, and great nephew
Finnegan, his nephew Liam (Deb) Brownrigg, and his niece Margaret Jenkins.
Craig always loved his Uncle Donald and Ruth Matheson and their children (from
Vancouver).
We mustn’t forget one of his greatest loves – the cabin at Gull Lake! He
cherished every moment spent there, building, fixing, relaxing, and creating
lifelong memories and friendships with the Horners and Moriartys. He loved
having his family and friends there with him.
His beloved wife of 51 years, Brenda, and his cherished daughter Jessica will
miss him terribly. They hold him dear with so much love and fondness, and with
gratitude for the wisdom he imparted, his integrity, the honour he carried in his
heart, and his unwavering love.
The following quote by Raymond Chandler resonated with Craig’s family in his
final days:
“Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is
neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero; he is everything. He must be a
complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use
a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor—by instinct, by inevitability, without
thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world
and a good enough man for any world.
“He will take no man’s money dishonestly and no man’s insolence without a due
and dispassionate revenge. He is a lonely man and his pride is that you will treat
him as a proud man or be very sorry you ever saw him.
“The story is this man’s adventure in search of a hidden truth, and it would be no
adventure if it did not happen to a man fit for adventure. If there were enough like
him, the world would be a very safe place to live in, without becoming too dull to
be worth living in.”
