Passed away peacefully early on the morning of January 16, 2015 with his wife of 61 years, Janny by his side. He died as he lived with great consideration for the people that he loved, and fortunate that those he cared for were able to say goodbye.
Henk was a wonderful husband, father, Opa and great Opa. Family and sharing life's many joys and celebrations were important to Henk. He was predeceased by parents, Anton and Wilhelmina, sisters Betsy, Wil, Gre, brothers Ad and Jan. and is survived by his wife, Janny, and brother Herman and two daughters; Marian, (Bill), Angela (Mike ) and grandchildren Tara (Kelly), Drew (Megan), Isaac (Melisa), Megan (Mason), Yakira (Didi), Larissa, great grandson Hunter. He had the knowing that 2 more great grand children would be arriving later this summer.
He began his life July 5, 1929, in Oldenzaal Holland, As his dad and brothers before him, he served as a Sergeant in the Dutch Army which allowed him to meet Janny in Weesp. They were married in 1954 and the couple immigrated to Canada that same year, arriving in Toronto, Ontario to begin their lives together and raise their family.
Several years later, they purchased the cottage property in the Kawarthas, and spent every summer making happy memories, swimming, waterskiing, exploring and enjoying many campfire evenings. The cottage was their pride and joy with always a project on the go, where many lifelong friendships were created and memories continued on by the grandchildren.
Henk was a valued, employee of Baxter Corp. as a purchasing agent, which he retired from in 1991, with over 37 years of service. He had many hobbies besides the cottage such as wood working, electric trains, and the computer and enjoyed organizing people events. Once retired they moved to Redwood Meadows, AB where for many years they were closer to both the girls and their families, and yet able to travel to the Ontario cottage for many wonderful summers. The Alberta Mountains afforded them many day trip adventures and experiences. They were active members of Redwood Meadows Senior Club, which Henk also led for several years. Their final destination was Vancouver Island - Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo.
Such a gracious, loyal, loving life Henk lived! The day of his passing was an unusually brilliant, sunny BC day ending with a spectacular sunset. A few days later our family was greeted by a phenomenal rainbow that spanned the sky and was perfectly reflected in Long Lake, a sign that Henk was at peace. Henk’s family would like to extend their deepest thanks to doctors and nurses that supported him, Dr Booth, Dr Forrester, Nanaimo Kidney Care Clinic, Dufferin Place, Nanaimo Palliative Care, as well as the staff at Berwick on the Lake. The family requests consideration of donations to the Nanaimo Kidney Care Clinic http://www.bcrenalagency.ca/nanaimo-kidney-care-clinic, in his name.
A private family celebration was held Sunday, January 18, 2015.
