Kathleen Isabel Green, Age 101 and 247 days, died on December 18th, 2022 at Fir Park Village in Port Alberni with family by her side. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great, great grandmother and great, great, great grandmother sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
Kathleen (Kay) found peace after Alzheimer’s disease, which had over time taken away many precious memories, but never her ability to love.
Kay was born Kathleen Isabel Cowley on April 5, 1921 in Port Alberni, BC and was the middle child with 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Cowley Road in Cherry Creek is named in their honour.
Kay worked as a cook’s assistant at Mclean Mill where she met a worker, a shy good looking young man named Kermit Green. Over time and with the help of her brother she was able to make conversation with him and eventually asked him to be her boyfriend.
They married in 1939 on the 30th of December in Watcom County Washington. Even though Kay’s mother eventually grew to adore Kermit, the couple escaped to be married in Washington State to avoid having to get permission from her parents as she was shy of 19 years. Kay and Kerm had 4 children, numerous grandchildren and stayed in the Alberni Valley for the remainder of their years.
Kay went on to work in various departments for Woodwards department store, only to retire to take care of her aging father.
Ever the practical person Kay often kept to a routine. Sundays were for setting your hair in curlers for the week, Monday was for laundry, breakfast, lunch and dinner are important as is a daily walk. She loved gardening, bird watching, painting with water colour, playing games, reading Catherine Cookson, half a beer on a hot day and occasionally cooking. Kay also loved the tv show the Price is Right, Golden Girls, Survivor and Cops.
Unlike the rest of her family, Kay wasn’t overly affectionate toward cats, despite having a large porcelain Persian cat she kept in her living room. Saying “it was the best pet she ever owned and very well behaved”
Kay was also funny, and enjoyed laughing with those dear to her. In her later years she enjoyed going to church with her sister, and daughters. Singing hymns and enjoying lunches after the service.
A few years after Kermit passed, Kay moved to Abbeyfield and eventually Fir Park Village where she spent a decade in the loving care of the staff who work there. As a family, we are forever thankful to all of her caregivers. Words are not enough to express this gratitude.
Kay is survived by her children Sharon (Fred), Dennis (Robin), and Linda (Garth), Grandchildren Debbie (Gary), Sandy (Bob), Bruce, Lisa (Matthieu), Michael (Amy), Evan and Hayley. Great Grandchildren, Chris, Jody, Christina, Harlow and Lou. Great, Great Grandchildren Tyanna, Tyler, Brody, Tessa, Colton, Kendra, and Austin. Kay was also a Great, Great, Great to Grandchild Declan whom she met and cuddled on many occasions.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Kermit of 61 years, (Carol); daughter, Kathy, (Granddaughter); Rory, (Grandson); Bobby, (Grandson);(Sisters), Margaret and Betty, (Brothers) Don and Bob, and her parents:(Gina and Harry).
Our family is comforted knowing that Kathleen Isabel Green knows who Kathleen Isabel Green is once more.
She loved and was loved.
A private family service will be held at a date.
