Norman Daniel McMillan

Daniel “Norman” McMillan was born on September 3, 1950, in Nanaimo, BC, to Phyllis and Edward McMillan. In 1952, the family planted their roots in Qualicum Beach, the place Norm would proudly call home for the rest of his life.

After an adventurous twenties, Norm met his life partner, Irene (Ohlson), and together they welcomed their first child, Nicholas, in 1982. Their early family years were filled with exciting road trips, camping, baseball games, and many beach days. In 1992, Norm and Irene welcomed their daughter, Deanna. Norm was a devoted father—coaching Nick in soccer and faithfully attending every one of Deanna’s riding lessons, no matter how long or rainy the day. Being present for his children was one of his greatest commitments and joys.

His family was everything to Norm. His favourite thing was go swimming at Qualicum Beach with various members of the family, especially his mom—they shared a deep connection to the ocean.

Always surrounded by a wide circle of friends, Norm was the steady presence in every room: a quiet observer, a loyal protector, thoughtful, and always ready with just the right words. He cared deeply, and he showed it in the way he lived.

A skilled woodworker and craftsman, Norm built the family home on Hall Road, where they lived for over 30 years. His gentle spirit, patience, and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who had the good fortune to know him and work with him—whether on a job site, or in the front yard where he always had a project on the go.

Norm is survived by his beloved partner, Irene; his children, Nicholas and Deanna; and many extended family and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Gayle, and his parents, Phyllis and Eddy.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the teams at Cowichan Lodge and Oyster Harbour for their devoted care of Norm in the final chapters of his story.

A celebration of Norm’s life will be held on January 3rd, 2026 at 1pm at Yates Memorial. All who knew and loved him are warmly welcome.
