Dixie grew up as an only child on a farm in Stratford, Texas to Bill and Elsie Lasley. She often told others her best friend growing up was her Grandpa Lasley; they had a very special bond and friendship. She helped on the farm in a way most kids would in the late 30’s – helping her Dad plow and haul wheat. This is where she learned her strong work ethics. She had a special friendship with her Mother, where she developed so many of her talents and her strong faith.
In 1949 she married the love of her life, Joe McAdams of Amarillo. They dated for two years, part of that time being while he was in the Navy. They had a small intimate wedding at her home on the farm. They lived in Corpus Christi in a tiny apartment until Joe was reassigned to San Diego, Ca. They started their family in San Diego where their first son, Steve was born.
Once Joe left the Navy they moved back to the farm in a small 2 bedroom home Dixie’s dad had built for them. Joe helped Dixie’s dad on the farm. Ted and Mark were born and they were a family of 5. Joe’s allergies led them to the Houston area where he pursued work in the refineries. They bought their first home and moved to Pasadena in 1957. The family grew to seven when Karan and Wendye were born. Dixie made motherhood look easy, she was a natural. They always sat down to a home cooked dinner together; she ensured they worked hard at school and enjoyed whatever extracurricular activity they were interested in pursuing.
In 1966 she began working at the Pasadena Anesthesiologist Group. She became the Administrator of the office and enjoyed a long friendship with a great group of ladies and doctors that were a part of her life for 30+ years.
Dixie had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress making special clothes for her children and grandchildren often. She enjoyed cooking and made the best apple and chocolate pie ever, said everyone that ever tasted her pie! She quilted, knitted and crocheted many afghans as well as her latest project of crocheting plastic bags for homeless pads. She enjoyed acrylic painting and made many items with her UMW friends for the church bazaar. She served many years as a volunteer to the PISD HOST program and the Pasadena Community Ministries.
Dixie had a strong faith in the Lord. She was a good and faithful servant. As quoted from her Granddaughter Kaitlyn’s Facebook post, she was a sweet, beautiful, loving, servant hearted, funny, pie making, family (and community) seamstress, selfless, Jesus praising Grandmother….we know she is rejoicing with the King of Kings. This is why He came. To rescue us. Thank you Jesus. And thank you for blessing this world and our family with our sweet Grandma Dixie.”
Dixie loved being a part of Asbury United Methodist Church. She was actively involved in Bible studies, United Methodist Women, Grace Middleton Group, Mission projects and served on numerous committees over the years. She loved her church family and her church family loved her back.
Memorial donations on Dixie’s behalf can be made to Asbury United Methodist Church.
