Napoleon was born to Justiniano Emilio Portillo-Carranza and Angela Florinda Araujo-Portillo on May 24, 1941. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend.
Napoleon was a man that lived and breathed music. He played and loved the guitar, piano, violin, guitarrón (large guitar), trumpet, harmonica, xylophone…etc. It was impressive that he could tune a guitar with his eyes closed. He was so talented that he could pick up any instrument and master it effortlessly. He was a true musician, through and through. Music was in his genes, everything was self-taught. As a young man in El Salvador, he and his two brothers (Tito & Rolando) formed a trio group called “Trio de Los Portillo’s” where they performed countless serenades. His strong voice lit up a room. He enjoyed singing ballads and rancheras. If you knew him, you would know that his idol was Pedro Infante. He also never passed the opportunity to sing at his church. His passion and talent for music was passed down to all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Napoleon was known for his wit and his storytelling. He often entertained people with stories of his adventures as a youth. He had a great sense of humor; always had something funny to say. Even in his last days of life, he had a smile on his face.
Napoleon was also a deeply spiritual man. His commitment to his faith was unwavering; he rarely missed a Sunday service.
Napoleon will be lovingly remembered by his 9 children: Vilma Carballo (Elmer), Napoleon Portillo (Maria de la Cruz Zapata), Ronald Portillo (Leddy Ardon), Mayra Guardado (Jesús), Carlos Portillo (Karen), Roxana Mejia (Fredy), Dora Hedrick (Patrick), Richard Portillo (Judith), Linda Portillo; 32 Grandchildren: Claudia Mace, Elmer Carballo, Angela Carballo, Alexander Carballo, Napoleon Portillo Jr., Eduardo Portillo, Sheena Portillo, Josue Villegas, Ronald Portillo Jr., Lizette Portillo, Alana Portillo, Nadine Portillo, Danielle Portillo, Giovanni Portillo, Jesus Guardado Jr, Jacqueline Guardado, Carlos Portillo, Samantha Portillo, Jaslene Portillo, Alexander Portillo, Giovani Portillo, Gisele Portillo, Santiago Mejia, Moises Mejia, Estefania Mejia, Savannah Hedrick, Jaylah Portillo, Richard Portillo, Noah Portillo, Osvaldo Portillo, Samuel Aguilar, Michael Vargas; 19 Great-Grandchildren: Emily Carballo, Judith Carballo, Elmer Carballo, Angel Cruz, Christopher Cruz, Adrian Carballo, Noah Carballo, Alexander Carballo, Ileen Portillo, Emma Portillo, Napoleón (Napito III) Portillo, Eduardo Portillo, Adriana Portillo, Carolina Portillo, Erian Cavazos, Athena Portillo, Kylo Portillo, Kimberly Portillo, Ezio Portillo; two younger sisters Flor Armida Trujillo-Portillo and Haydee Portillo-Rena; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
