Charles “Chuckie” Fontes was born on August 23, 1952, in Fairfield, California. As a young boy, he moved to Southern California, where he was raised in Los Angeles County. As the firstborn grandchild, Chuck was deeply loved and doted on by his family.
From an early age, Chuck was a natural athlete. He played both baseball and football and later developed a love for golf. Competition came easily to him, and his athletic talent earned him many first-place trophies over the years.
After graduating from high school, Chuck proudly joined the military in 1970. His service to his country was a source of great pride throughout his life, and he remained a devoted veteran.
In 1984, Chuck welcomed his daughter, Brook, and devoted himself to giving her a life full of love and unforgettable experiences. One of their favorite traditions was attending Dodgers games every summer, always sitting on the first-base side so they could see into the Dodgers’ dugout.
Chuck worked as a carpenter at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he met the love of his life, Gina. They married in 1990, and it feels especially fitting that their love story began at a place dedicated to the moon and the stars.
In 2018, Chuck and Gina moved to Paso Robles to be closer to family. There, he spent his remaining years surrounded by loved ones, enjoying time together and watching Dodgers baseball.
Chuck had a playful spirit and loved to joke around, often pulling harmless pranks. His laugh was unforgettable and contagious, once something struck him as funny, he simply couldn’t stop laughing.
He was affectionately known as “the man in black,” rarely wearing any other color, partly because it meant he never had to separate his laundry. He loved his dark blue Harley-Davidson, aviator sunglasses, leather jacket and Rock ’n’ Roll. Chuck especially loved singing Elvis Presley songs.
Chuck is survived by his loving family, who will carry his laughter, stories, and spirit with them always—a legend is never forgotten.
