James Michael Currie, 97, died May 12, 2026. He was born July 26, 1928, in Santa Monica, California, to Parents Patrick J Currie and Myrtle E. Currie. Jim was raised in the Highland Park area of Los Angeles and graduated from Cathedral High School. He later made his home in Paso Robles, California.
After graduation, Jim joined the Army and served overseas in field artillery and combat for two years in Korea. Following his discharge, he attended Glendale College and then graduated from radio and television school in Hollywood. With a steady work ethic and a gift for showing up fully to the task at hand, Jim built a career as an announcer at various radio and TV stations throughout Southern California, including KVEC Radio and Channel 6 in San Luis Obispo.
In 1965, Jim opened “Currie’s Equipment Rental.” The floods of 1972 caused him to lose the business, and he went on to work in law enforcement, retiring from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office as a CO. Through each chapter—whether in uniform, behind a microphone, running a business, or serving his community—Jim’s devotion to providing for others and doing what needed to be done remained constant.
In 1955, while working in San Luis Obispo as a disc jockey, Jim met and married Dalene Brussow. Together they had three children: Stephen Currie, Kevin Currie, and Rochelle Scott. Later in life, while working at the Sheriff’s Office and would retire as a Sargent Co, Jim met and married Carol Lee Deiux, and their lives became a blended family of six, including her three children: Russell Spates, Reann Schwifbert, and Rosemary Green. The blending of the family also gave him plenty of grandchildren and great children.
A faithful presence in his community, Jim was a Grand Knight of Columbus and worked with the Catholic church—quietly living out a commitment to service that shaped his life and the lives of those around him. Jim will be missed by friends and family and everyone who loved him.
