John Brian Charnley was born in Rochdale, near Manchester, England in May 1934. After his education, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and saw much of the World. Soon after, he married his sweetheart Mavis and the children followed. Looking to improve his lot in life, Brian made the impactful decision to relocate his young family to the U.S., making the trek with little more than dreams and stuffed suitcases. After a brief stint in the Midwest, they made their way to California, eventually settling in Atascadero. Through the years, he took on a variety of jobs while the children grew and started their own families, staying along the Central Coast. Brian became a master landscaper for local homes and businesses. He traveled with Mavis in the later years while pursuing his love of horticulture. Brian is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mavis (Drury) Charnley; daughter, Karen Hartman (Jack) of Arroyo Grande; son, Anthony Charnley (Linda) of Paso Robles; son, Ian (Tami) of Paso Robles; brother, Kevin Charnley (Valerie) of England; and sister, Marie Holloway (Olly) of Portugal. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Peter, and his sons: Andrew and Kevin Charnley. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 7, 2018, for friends and family. Please call Karen (805-473-0467) for more information. Arrangements under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles, CA.
