He died suddenly of lung cancer surrounded by his family and friends at the age of 67.
Steve was born in Peoria, Illinois and raised in Whittier, California. He attended college at California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, where he met Anne Barnum. They graduated and married in 1970, moving to Fresno to pursue a law degree at San Joaquin College of Law in 1974. He passed the bar in 1978, and left for Paso Robles with Anne and his daughter, Katie, in 1981. Here he practiced civil law for 17 years before joining the San Luis Obispo Superior Court as a traffic referee in 1998. Steve became a Court Commissioner in 2004.
A beloved son, father and husband, he is survived by his mother Miriam Jean, brother Jim, wife Barbara, daughter Katie Kimball (Michael), grandson Briggs, in addition to his nephews Todd and Darren Sefton, David Barnum, niece Cherie Moreno, stepsons Greg and Spencer Riffenburgh, and their families.
His father Howard, first wife Anne, and sister-in-law Susan preceded him in death.
Steve was very fulfilled by mentoring the youth who entered his courtroom and working with their families in helping them to become healthy and contributing members to the community.
Living his life spiritually, he was an active Vestry member, as well as Head of the Stewardship Committee for the last 3 years, with the St. James Episcopal Church in Paso Robles.
He is remembered for his compassionate contribution to society, fair and honest approach, steadfast and genuine nature, service mindedness, generous manner, loyal friend, loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
There will be a public viewing at Keuhl-Nicolay Funeral Home on Saturday, January 16th, 3-6pm. An open Celebration of Life will be held at the Adelaide Hall on the Ca. Mid-State Fairgrounds on Sunday, January 17th from 3-5pm. The funeral service is scheduled to begin at 1pm at St. James Episcopal Church in Paso Robles, Monday January 18th, followed by the burial at the Paso Robles District Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be forwarded to the following: St. James Episcopal Church of Paso Robles, Boys & Girls Club of Paso Robles, and the Paso Robles Children’s Museum. Arrangements under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles, CA.
