Born on November 19, 1936, in Helen, West Virginia, Charles later moved to Ohio, where he created a life rooted in hard work, family, and unwavering values. He recently celebrated 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia, with whom he shared a deep and lasting love.
Charles was a proud father to three children—Charles Jr. (BethAnn), Thomas (Victoria), and Lisa (Donald). He was a loving and devoted grandfather to Ross, Ryan, Keith, Seth, Katie, Gavin, Rebecca, and Amantha, and a cherished great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear sister, Delores, “Sissy.” Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Bonnie Tankersley, as well as his siblings, Arnold Lilly, who helped shape his life and the values he carried with him. Known affectionately for his warm laugh, quick wit, playful nicknames, and endless supply of bubble gum, Charles created lasting memories with each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that they will carry with them always.
He dedicated over 30 years of his career to Columbus Auto Parts, where he was active in the union, serving as union President, and was known for his integrity and strong work ethic. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Charles served as a signal caller and remained fiercely proud of his service and his country throughout his life. He always took pride in the fact that his military service gave him the opportunity to see parts of the world that many never would, experiences he cherished and spoke of fondly.
Charles found joy in life’s simple pleasures—working on cars, hunting for arrowheads, splitting wood, tending to his garden, and helping his family and neighbors whenever and wherever he could. He took immense pride in building his own home and raising his children with the same strong values he lived by every day. He was also a lifelong and passionate fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, rarely missing a game and always cheering them on with pride.
Above all, Charles was a man of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and boundless love for his family. He got to leave this world the way he wanted—surrounded by his loved ones, in his own home, and draped in the American flag, with military dignity and the peace of a life well lived. The memories made with him and Patricia—full of laughter, love, and countless cherished moments—will never be forgotten.
Per Charles’s wishes, he will be cremated. No service is planned at this time.
