Jo was born on August 18, 1936, to William and Marie Swick in Summit Station, OH. After graduating from Summit High School in 1954, she began a successful career as a typist at Buckeye Union and retired from CNA in 1995. Her roles as a wife, mother and gran were her favorite.
She met the love of her life, Charles “Gil” Smith on the Square in Newark, OH, where they fell head over heels in love. After 3 short weeks of dating, they wed on June 21, 1957, and were still happily married at the time of her passing. They went on to have 3 wonderful children, Deborah “Deb” (Bob) Maroldy, Charles “Chuck” (Karen) Smith, and Paul (Susan) Smith. She also played a large part in raising her granddaughter and “bonus child,” Jennifer “Jenny” (Kurtis Herlocher) Thacker. "Gran” was beloved by her grandson Kyle (DesiRae Todd) Smith; great grandchildren Alicia “Ali” (Anthony) Bell, Erica (Vinny Meszaros) Thacker, and Lucas Thacker.
She had a great love for dachshunds, going on to own four throughout her life. She loved to gamble, play euchre and bingo, spend time with family and cheer on her grandkids at their sports games and shows. Road tripping in the motorhome around the US (especially to Las Vegas) with her husband were some of her most treasured times.
Jo was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, brother and sister-in-law Dwight (Mary) Swick, and sister and brother-in-law Mary Jean (Calvin) Hobbs; all of whom she spoke of often. She is survived by her devoted husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, a host of other family and beloved friends.
Visitation will be held at Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home, 289 S. Main St., Pataskala OH, on Wednesday March 27, 2024, from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.
