Raymond Jay Langel

Raymond ‘Ray’ Jay Langel, 71, of Pataskala, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on February 26, 1953, in Columbus, OH, a son to the late Robert ‘Bob’ and Freda (Finley) Langel. Ray is survived by his wife, Rhoda; children, Emily Thomes (Justin), Deni Phillips (Eric Nicholas) and Lance (Megan); grandchildren, Carter, Patrick, Theo, Cora and Hudson (soon-to be); brother, William ‘Willie’ (Barb), sister, Lynda Bombach, and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was a devoted husband, father, and papaw. He lived many lives. Ray grew up on a farm in Pataskala. In his younger years, he went to California on a motorcycle trip with friends. He also headed to Florida and ended up staying there a while. While he was there, he had a short stint as a beach bum and won a sand volleyball championship. When he returned home, he worked for John Deere, where his dad worked. He later graduated from the Police academy, met his wife Rhoda and they raised three wonderful children.

Ray loved spending time with his family, watching sports and westerns, and driving his truck. One of his biggest accomplishments is retiring after 25 years from the Columbus Police Department in 2013. He was a great man in every possible way. He would always think of others and make sure they were taken care of before thinking of himself. He was very thoughtful and intentional with every decision he made. He raised his children to always do the right thing, treat people with respect, and have a positive impact on their community. Near the end of his life he was showered with so much love from the people he met from every chapter of his life.

Memorial visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. & 4-6 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2024 at KAUBER-FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, 289 S. Main St., Pataskala, OH 43062. Memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Calvin Alexander officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made in Ray’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project and Capital City Hospice.
