William (Bill) Mapes, age 82, went peacefully to be with Jesus on Wednesday, September 18 surrounded by his family. Bill was a kind and dedicated man of God, honoring Christ in everything he did. He was always reaching out to serve others in any way he could. He put others before himself, making sure everyone else was taken care of and comfortable. He never met a stranger and used his sense of humor to put others at ease.
Bill served in many ministries in his church. He had a special heart for the homeless and enjoyed serving at the Open Shelter and the YWCA Family Center. He was a founding member of the Thanksgiving Dinner at his church. For approximately 30 years, he led the Partners in Christ Sunday School class which was truly like his second family. Many people came to know Jesus because of Bill’s influence.
Bill was an avid model railroader and spent countless happy hours with his amazing model railroad friends. He also enjoyed riding trains and had many Amtrak adventures.
Bill retired from the federal government in the Human Resources field. In his retirement, he worked for the Licking County Aging Program where he cared for and served the senior population.
Bill is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy; children, Sue (Eddy) Casas, Tim (Marsha) Mapes, Zach Mapes, and Hannah (Isaac) O’Brien; granddaughter, Flora O’Brien; sister-in-law, Linda Gebhardt; nephews, Eric and Ryan Gebhardt.
Bill was never happier than when he was spending time with his family. He was devoted to his wife and family and was always there for them, in big and small ways.
He was passionate about his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and tried to take every opportunity to share Him with others.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me – the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of His return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to His appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
