Janet Louise McLean Allis was born on May 17, 1941, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Walter and Beatrice McLean. She passed away surrounded by her family on March 12th, 2025, in Peachtree City, Georgia. Jan was the second oldest of four siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her oldest sister, Barbara Schray. She is survived by her younger brother, Cliff McLean, and youngest sister, Gail Durbin.
Jan grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She was an exemplary student in high school. She chose to attend college at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, where she continued to strive for academic excellence. Jan graduated Magna cum laude in just 3 ½ years. On her 2nd day of college, she met her future husband, Richard "Dick" Allis. They married on September 1st, 1962, just before their senior year began.
Dick and Jan built a beautiful life together. They adopted and raised two children, Patrick, and Sheryl. During Dick's time of service with the US Airforce, they lived all over the US as well as overseas in Taipei, Taiwan. Following Dick's military commitment, the couple settled in Georgia. They have resided for the past 48 years in the same home in Peachtree City, becoming well-loved pillars of their community. They also continued traveling with their children, as Dick's life-long career as an airline pilot allowed them many opportunities to explore the world around them.
Jan was a voracious reader. She helped start a Book Club in 1985 and was an active member until she passed away. She was also a member of "The Friends of Peachtree City Library". In addition to reading, Jan had many other interests and hobbies. She played tennis and was on several tennis teams in the Atlanta area. She was active in several different community and social clubs over the years that encompassed many of her interests from stitching, investing, reading, and dining. She also enjoyed volunteering her time and shared her talents as a hospital "Pink Lady" during her younger years. She also volunteered at a local thrift shop alongside her husband Dick, after he retired. Jan also spent many years exercising her civic responsibilities as an official in Fayette County voting centers. Jan was very artistic and creative. There were few arts or crafts that she had not attempted or mastered. She enjoyed cross stitching, knitting, sewing, quilting, painting, woodworking, and making pottery, just to name a few. Jan encouraged those around her to appreciate art too. For more than a decade, she served on the committee for the annual "Old Courthouse Art Show" in Fayetteville.
Aside from Jan's many talents and interests, she loved her family most of all. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Richard, “Dick". She is survived by her son Patrick, his wife Andrea; daughter Sheryl, her husband John; and four grandchildren, Kyle and Kevin Allis and Joshua and Jordana Young. Janet will be deeply missed by her family, life-long friends, and those within her community.
No formal memorial service is planned. There will be a private Celebration of Life Reception for the immediate family and her closest friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Janet’s honor to Christian City in Union City, Georgia at https://christiancity.org/donate/
