

Dr. Joseph Samuel “Sam” Tolbert, Jr., age 64, of Fayetteville, GA passed away on September 22, 2011. He was born in Atlanta, GA on March 28, 1947 to Nan Wheeler Stevenson and Joseph Samuel Tolbert Sr. He was a loving son, father, brother, and grandfather. He served in the Vietnam War as a Radarman 2nd Class E-5 in the United States Navy where he was the recipient of the National Defence Medal. He was a career student and loved to learn. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and flying model airplanes. Sam earned his Bachelor and Master Degrees as Southern Polytechnic State University, known as "Georgia's Technology University" and his PHD at Kennedy-Western University. He worked at Scientific Atlanta and Rockwell in GA. After retirement he recently taught at Gordon College and was on the Fayette County Board of Education. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Samuel Tolbert, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Nan Stevenson; wife, Lynn Allen Tolbert; son, Matthew Samuel Tolbert; daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Tolbert; granddaughter, Kyla Gesa-Lee Froehlich; sisters, Lisa Hall and Kelly Porter. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City, GA on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 3:00pm with Rev. Nathaniel A. Long officiating. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dr. Sam Tolbert Educational Fund at the Fayetteville branch of Suntrust Bank.
