Richard Albert Allis passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025. He was 84 years old. “Dick” was born on November 6, 1940. He was raised by Bert and Leah Salisbury-Allis in the small towns west of Rochester, New York. He was the oldest of four children; two younger brothers Bob and Jan, who preceded him in death; and one sister, Diane Allis-Wurzburg, the youngest of the siblings.
Dick met Jan, his eventual wife, a few days after arriving at Bowling Green State University in Ohio; It was Jan’s first day of college. They began dating and married just before their senior year. Dick and Jan celebrated their 62nd anniversary on September 1, 2024.
Dick joined ROTC in college and was a distinguished military graduate. He immediately moved to flight training in the U.S. Air Force in Selma, Alabama, just before the historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, so the move was a very momentous beginning to his Air Force career. The next year he flew B-47s in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), standing on alert and flying nuclear weapons. The Air Force took Dick and Jan many places during his time of service. They lived in Selma, AL, and Mountain Home, ID, while he was in SAC. When he transitioned to the C-130, he served his time in Taipei, Taiwan, Hampton, VA, Vietnam, the far East, Europe and finally home in the US.
The couple settled in Georgia for the next six decades, most of that time spent in Peachtree City. They raised two children, Patrick and Sheryl. Dick continued professional piloting for Delta Air Lines. He flew many different aircraft types for Delta during his career and also served many other valuable roles including Line-Check Airman. Dick retired from flying in 2000, after 32 years of service.
Dick began his life-long love of athletics in high school by becoming the captain of the basketball team. He continued playing basketball throughout his college years. In addition to basketball, Dick was an avid bicyclist, runner, and tennis player. He played tennis on a Delta Air Lines team and in Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA). Dick joined the Peachtree City Running Club and was also a member of the SouthSide Cycling Club. He never stopped participating with these organizations, continuing to volunteer when his physical limitations didn’t allow him to run or bike.
Dick was a firm believer in giving back to his community. After retirement, he volunteered at the Clothes Less Traveled for over 20 years. He organized and repaired electronics as well as bikes. He was also well-known in the community for accepting donations of broken bikes and repairing them for needy kids. He began this project 30 years ago, and has repaired thousands of bicycles to give back to his community.
Besides his wife Janet, he leaves behind his two children and their spouses, Patrick and Andrea Allis; Sheryl and John Young; and four grandchildren, Kyle and Kevin Allis and Joshua and Jordan Young. Dick will be missed immeasurably by his community, friends, neighbors, and his family.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City, GA at 2:00pm.
