Ruby Lee Moore Scott, 92, of Peachtree City, passed away August 29, 2019. She was born the first child to the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Blanche Moore on December 7, 1926 in Perryville, West Jefferson County, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her Beloved husband of 44 years Henry Lee Scott, Jr (1991); oldest son, Henry Lee Scott, III (1971); mother, Blanche Delia Moore Mapp (1990) and step-father Nelson Mapp.

Ruby’s mother Blanche, like so many intuitive African Americans during the time of unjust torment and civil rights strife, looked for a better life for her two young daughters, Ruby and Vera, approximately 11 and 9 years old and migrated to Detroit, Michigan seeking a better life during the Great Northward Migration, settling on the West Side of Detroit with their grandmother Pellie and many other relatives who previously migrated from the South. THANK YOU for your journey of courage and faith.

Ruby attended and graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit, participating in sports and achieved recognition with several trophies and ribbons for Track and Field. Ruby met Henry L Scott, Jr. also a graduate of Northwestern High School, and an amateur boxer with the renowned original Kronz Boxing Center in Detroit. Henry was an accomplished singer and trumpeter with the Scott family from the original New Light Baptist Church. Henry, a WWII Veteran & Ruby married in January 1947 and during their marriage had 4 beautiful children. As a young mother Ruby was as a homemaker, but remained active in her children’s school activities by volunteering (in her children’s opinion) for every single thing she could at Pattengail Elementary School where her children attended school, then began a career with the Detroit Public school system as a secretary, remained active in the local PTA holding several positions, always seeming to have all the meetings at the family home. Ruby was also a Den Mother for the local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts that her children were a part of.

Ruby enjoyed an active parenting, community, volunteer and social life through various activities and social standings with Henry in The Idlewilders and other community organizations. Ruby was a member of The Westside Improvement Association, and long- time member of Gesu and Saint Theresa Catholic School Parishes.

Ruby developed her eye and passion for fashion and accepted a position with the legendary J L Hudson Company of Detroit in their Couture Department promoting and selling such fashion icons as Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Giorgio Armani and others, retiring from JL Hudson in 1991.

Some of her hobbies were sewing, traveling, line dancing, bingo and making the best macaroni and cheese and home made rolls (like Aunt Elvira’s).

After retirement, Ruby also lived in West Bloomfield Hills, Mi, Dumfries, Virginia and Peachtree City, GA where she enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, then later with her Great-grandchildren.

To Celebrate a Life Well Lived and to carry forth her tradition of love, commitment to family and a selfless duty to community, she leaves behind her cherished children, Sheila Rosarian George of Novi, MI; Laura Scott Dinkins (John Sr) of Peachtree, City, GA; and Eugene Andrew Scott, II of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, John Anthony Dinkins, Jr, (Jessica) of Peachtree City; and Carlos LaMar Dinkins, Sr (Chelsea) of Miami, FL; great grandchildren, John Jr. and Jessica’s children, Brooklyn Anani Dinkins, John Anthony Dinkins, III and Mason Carlos Dinkins ; Carlos and Chelsea’s son, Carlos “Charlie” Lee Dinkins. Ruby is also survived by her lovely sister Vera Veronica Weiss of North Palm Beach, FL; nephews, Gregory Carl Weiss of Mandeville, LA/West Bloomfield, MI; Herbert Augustus Weiss, Jr (Kristi) of North Palm, FL, /Detroit, MI; and Leven Comer Weiss, II of West Bloomfield, MI); and niece Diana Blanche Weiss of Chicago, IL; first cousins, grand nieces and nephews, a plethora of friends and well- wishers.

Through my friend, Laura Scott Dinkins, I met one of the most elegant and gracious woman I know, Mrs. Ruby Scott. She always welcomed me with open arms and made me feel very special, with her words/her smile/her wide, gleaming eyes and uplifted eyebrows, as if she was as happy to see me as she was to see her own family. As the saying goes, “people will forget what you’ve said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget the way you made them feel.” Miss Ruby, that is your legacy to me...that special feeling you gave to everyone you met. You will be sorely missed.

My first memories of Grandma Ruby are of Carlos calling her every Sunday and checking in when we lived in Hawaii. I knew she must be a really special lady to have her 24 year old grandson checking in on her so diligently each weekend. My first trips ever to the south were staying at her house where she so graciously let me stay and come home at all hours of the night with Carlos and then offered us salted cucumber slices in the morning as a hangover cure. We have another guardian angel watching over us now. We love you Grandma Ruby.
