She was born on August 19, 1932 in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Nell was the only daughter of Columbus and Lillian Dobbins. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 44 years, Tommy J. Scoggin.
She was a graduate of Limestone college in Gaffney SC, where she sang in the choir and played softball. She began a 35 year teaching career in North Carolina before moving to Tennessee and eventually retiring from Pearl Public Schools. Her love for learning turned into a mission to teach others. Over the years she taught Science, French, Computer Discovery, Home Economics and her most fun class, Bachelor Living.
She was a Member of McLaurin Heights Baptist Church in Pearl, where she taught a women’s Sunday School class and sang in the choir. When Dementia had stolen her ability to express her thoughts and words, she could still sing them along with some of her favorite hymns. She was a member of the Rankin County Master Gardeners Association. She enjoyed many years of traveling around the United States, United Kingdom and Germany. She loved caring for her flowers and sewing. Reading was also one of her favorite pastimes. She was fiercely independent and unafraid to try new things, like white water rafting and go cart rides at 83 years old.
Nell is survived by her son, Daryl J. Scoggin (Nora) of Denham Springs, LA and daughter, Ruth Scoggin Gullette (Marlon) of Pearl, MS. She was the proud grandmother of six and great-grandmother to nineteen.
Nell lived her last two years at Cooperwood Assisted Living in Memory Care. She was blessed to have many kind and compassionate caregivers.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. The funeral service will be at 10:00am on Friday, October 25, 2024 in the funeral home chapel with burial afterwards at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl.
