Mrs. Patsy “Mammaw” Ann Grubbs Steen, age 82, of Florence passed away on Thursday morning after a years’ long, hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on March 19, 1940, in Simpson County to William Hinton and Hazel May Grubbs. She attended Raleigh High School and graduated in 1959.
After her high school graduation, Patsy’s parents relocated from Raleigh to Jackson. She took some business classes at Draughon’s Business College. She also worked in the ticket booth at the Paramount Theater in Jackson where she met the love of her life, James Edward Steen. They wed on February 24, 1963, and they were married 55 years at the time of his passing. After they wed, she worked at the Green Derby Restaurant until the birth of their first child when she became a full-time wife and mother.
During the years of rearing their two sons, Patsy also took care of her parents until each one’s death. Patsy and her mother, Hazel, enjoyed cross-stitching, embroidery, canning, jelly-making, and taking walks together. She also enjoyed her weekly visits to the beauty shop.
In her later years, Patsy thoroughly enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s school functions (plays, awards days, etc.), piano recitals, and their sporting events; she was particularly fond of watching them play basketball. She and James attended these events/functions together, and they spent a great deal of time together following his retirement; she would remark that they were “two peas in a pod.” And, they were. They shared an inspiring love and devotion for one another.
When Patsy required around the clock care and moved into Plainview Assisted Living, she embraced her new surroundings and family there. She considered it home and often told us how she “just loved her room” there. Her Plainview family has many “Patsy stories” that they so graciously and lovingly shared with us during her final days. We are most grateful for the love they showered upon her not only in her final days but in the 3 1/2 years she lived there.
Patsy was a fine Christian woman who embodied and lived out one of her favorite passages, 1 Corinthians 13. She had the true heart of a servant, always willing to help friends and family with anything they needed. She was not only a classy woman, but she was a well-respected woman full of integrity and deeply adored and loved by her family.
Patsy was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James; her mother, Hazel May Grubbs; her father, William Hinton Grubbs; and her brother, Jerry Grubbs.
She is survived by her two children, Ricky Steen of Pearl and Ken (Tracy) Steen of Florence; and her five grandchildren: William Marshal Steen, Hannah Bailey Steen, Anna Grace Steen, Elizabeth Brooke Steen, and Caleb Thomas Steen.
Thanks to all the family and friends who supported our family during this time and a special thanks to the staff/family at Plainview Assisted Living for taking such great care of her and to Enhabit Hospice for making Mammaw comfortable in her final days to her journey Home. We would also like to say a special thanks to Lacie Bates for helping us care for her in the last month.
Patsy was a loving and devoted wife, a caring and attentive mother, and an adored and doting Mammaw always serving others whenever they were in need.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
The family will receive friends from 9:00am until 11:00am on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. The funeral service will follow afterwards at 11:00am that same day in the funeral home chapel. Burial will take place at Hickory Ridge Cemetery in Florence.
