Renate was born July 11, 1923, in Leeste, Germany, a daughter of the late Wilhelm H. Friedrich Kopmann and Meta Johanna Hildebrandt Kopmann. Renate had a keen interest in learning which served her well throughout her lifetime. As a young adult her advanced skills and multi-lingual proficiency enabled Renate to acquire desirable positions within the workforce.
Following WWII she was employed by the U.S. Army in Germany, where she met a young G.I., Clayton James Burns. In July 1948 they decided to marry, a decision that presented its own unique quandary. Following THREE wedding ceremonies- one recognized by the German government, one by the U.S. Army, and finally a church union- Renate and Clayton moved to America in October 1948. In the U.S. Renate worked for many years as a bookkeeper and secretary while caring for her husband and three children.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, and later by her son, Winfred C. Burns.
Survivors include daughter, Ursula Burns Wimpee; son, Michael C. Burns and wife Debi; daughter-in-law, Iris Burns; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Renate’s 99 years were filled with much love- love for learning, love for labor, and chiefly, love for family and friends. She was blessed to retain her mental faculties until her transition from this life, and in so, everyone within her circle was blessed in return.
In accordance with her wishes Renate’s earthly remains will be cremated and her ashes interred beside her beloved husband in a private service at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
