Born in Jianxi, China, Shu H. Chang came to the U.S. in 1956 as a graduate student of chemistry at University of Cincinnati. After earning her Ph.D. in 1960, she married Frank K. Chang in 1962 and began teaching at various colleges and universities.
In the late 1960s, Shu, Frank, and their son made their home in Vicksburg, MS, where she first worked as a Research Chemist in the Concrete Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station. From 1969-2004, Dr. Chang was a chemistry professor at Hinds Community College, Raymond, MS. She was also an avid amateur photographer who continued to exhibit her award-winning work after retiring from her teaching career.
A victim of a wrong-way driving collision, Shu passed away at University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, on June 2, 2019. Frank died a few months later on September 10, 2019; see his obituary also. They are both survived by son Larry, daughter-in-law Dinah McFarlane, and granddaughter Linnea.
