Walter was born on November 12, 1945, in Roanoke, Virginia, to the late Walter Humphrey and Marie Tucker. He was raised with strong values of service, family, and hard work—principles he carried throughout his life.
After graduating high school in Bogue Chitto, MS, Walter proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968. Following his military service, he built a long and steady career as a dedicated truck driver, a job that took him across the country and gave him a deep appreciation for quiet sunrises, peaceful sunsets, and the beauty of life on the road.
On July 20, 1996, Walter married the love of his life, Gloria Jean. They moved to Florence, MS in 1998. He retired in January 2023, and in retirement, he found joy in the simple things: tending to his beloved rose garden, watching the birds outside his window, and sharing his passion for finances and 401Ks—always eager to help others make smart decisions and build a better future.
Walter was a man who valued conversation and connection. Whether talking about investments, telling stories from the road, or sitting quietly with family, he made people feel seen and heard.
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Jean Humphrey; his brother, Ron Humphrey ( Ruth) of Summit, Mississippi; his sister, Jeanette Wallace (M.L.) of Ludlow, Mississippi; and six children: Robin Merry (Gordon) of Chandler, OK; Chris Humphrey (Ducky) of Baton Rouge, LA; Amy Humphrey of Fruita, CO; Ashley Hibbard of Florence, MS ;Jennifer Blaine of Richland, MS; and Leighan Hayes of Florence, MS. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Rhonda Tidwell, his granddaughter, Breanna Humphrey, and his sisters, Patricia Hartshorn and Chelsea Soule.
Walter’s warmth, wisdom, and presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Funeral services will be held at Briarhill Baptist Church in Florence, MS visitation at 10:00 am and the service at 11:00 am. Burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a rose bush or feed the birds in his memory—two of his favorite things.
