Buell Othello Singleton, 82, of Pearland, Texas, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 30, 2023. He was born July 27, 1941 to Charles Othello Batie Singleton and Hester Leona (Presswood) Singleton.
Buell graduated from Brazosport High School in 1959. He was a baritone singer in John Magee’s Acapella Choir and was proud of his solo part in the Hallelujah Chorus of the Messiah.
After graduation, Buell attended Southwest Texas State University where he was recognized for Academic Excellence. He later received an Associate of Science Degree from Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas.
At the age of 17, Buell joined the U. S. Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. While there, he received a certificate that would enable him to practice as a Dental Prosthetic Technician, a skill he used while working with Dr. Perry Mueller in Lake Jackson. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy.
On August 26,1967 Buell married his beloved wife, Cynthia Marie Carter and began their life together in Lake Jackson, Texas. They were blessed with a son, Charles, and a daughter, Larissa. Buell and his family were members of First Baptist Church in Lake Jackson for many years and were members of the church choir.
Buell worked for The Dow Chemical Company for 25 years where he made many life-long friends. He retired in 1992 as a Senior Development Specialist for Product Stewardship. Following his retirement, he worked as a Dow Consultant in Georgia.
Buell’s fondest years were spent on the waters of the Freeport and Galveston Gulf Coast. He was an avid fisherman, being taught by his father as a young boy. He was quite proud of the first-place fishing trophy he won for the largest tarpon caught that year. Buell loved sharing his fun-filled fishing days with close friends Reece Murray, David Melass, James Phillips, and the late John Tracy and Edward (Bud) Malone. He also enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law Woody Carter and kidding that he needed to teach him to fish like a pro!
Buell was able to use his fishing expertise and handyman skills as a caretaker and event coordinator at the Dow Hunting and Fishing Club at Harris Reservoir where he worked for 3 years before moving to Pearland.
Buell also enjoyed playing golf, and had the pleasure of being present at one of the Master’s tournaments with his daughter Larissa while he was still in Georgia. Hunting was a pastime of Buell’s as well, but he felt greater enjoyment when he was able to join his son-in-law Scott, and his daughter Larissa, on the shooting range for target practice.
Buell was blessed to have shared a close friendship with Rick Moore, who provided him with both financial and spiritual guidance and counsel for many years. Kirby Lowery, Bill Howell, Jim Cooper, Larry Wilson, David Anderson, Bob Hawkins, the late Charlie Bouse, and his beloved supervisor, Tom Hairston, were also close friends of his for many years.
Buell’s focus in life was centered around his wife, children, and communicating with his two special nieces, Stephanie Marie and Jennifer Lynn, but his love extended to all other family members as well.
Buell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cynthia; a son, Charles Singleton and fiancé Nathan Robbins; a daughter, Larissa (Singleton) Ipsen and her husband Scott. He is also survived by two nephews David Wayne Singleton and James Virgil Singleton; brother-in-law Woody Carter and wife Nancy, and their daughter Stephanie and husband Blu Baillio and children Christopher, Maddie and Claire; and daughter Jennifer and husband Darin Dillard; brother-in-law Robert Miller and wife Roxanne; cousins Donald Malone and children; and sister Joan, Bud Malone's children; cousins Michael, Mary and Allen Presswood, Mary Lou Smith, Ann Hibbard, Zenus and James Graham and many other cousins and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Major (Con) Singleton and his wife Emma Singleton; Zenus and (Pop) Presswood and wife Mary Ethel Presswood; many aunts and uncles including his beloved aunt Ann (Auntie); his beloved cousin Edward (Bud) Malone and two brothers, Charles Zenus Singleton, and Kenneth Dwayne Singleton.
Buell is best remembered for his warm and friendly smile, wonderful sense of humor, never-failing presence as a gentleman, always first in-line when it came to helping others; and his fantastic love for food and family holidays, which he proved by his efforts to prepare fresh seafood for as many family members as often as possible.
Buell led a full and busy life, but most importantly, Buell will be remembered as a man who loved the Lord. When the Covid pandemic hit, he and his wife began worshipping in their living room together in the evenings. Their favorite pastors were late Rev. Billy Graham and the late Dr. Charles Stanley.
