Helen Lorice Mousa passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025. Born on March 30, 1936, in Tyler, Texas, Helen was the youngest of three children and the only daughter of Louis George Murad and Ruby Sawyer Murad.
Helen met her husband, Charles Edward Mousa, Sr., in Tyler, Texas, in a park where Helen, being an avid ping pong player, beat Charles in a match. Helen was a joy to all. Helen and Charles later married in Tyler, Texas, in 1962. They settled in Houston to start their life and family.
Upon earning her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Woman's University in 1958 Helen worked as an elementary school teacher for many years in the Houston area.
Helen was a member of St. George Orthodox Christian Church, and was active in different committees within the church, including the Ladies Altar Society and the Prayer Ministry Team. Given her passion for teaching, Helen also instructed Sunday school. Faith and prayer were of paramount importance in Helen's life. She was often referred to as "Saint Helen" due to her knowledge of the Orthodox faith and her teachings of Christ to everyone around her. She began each morning with prayers for her family and study of the Bible. Her love of her family and friends was truly reflected in her prayers over them.
Active in her culture, Helen was a member of the L'Entasar Lebanese Club of Houston, and a member of the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs. Helen served a term as First Lady of the Southern Federation (43rd Session, 1975) during her husband's term as President.
Helen loved to entertain, welcoming family and friends in her home. As an amazing cook she ensured you did not leave hungry. Everyone enjoyed her stuffed grape leaves and kibbeh nayeh!
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, her daughter, Janet Huseth, and her brother Dr. John Murad. She is survived by her brother Ralph Murad and wife Julia, son Charles and wife Rebecca, son George and wife Suzanne, son-in-law Gordon Huseth, grandchildren: Brittany McNair, Peter Huseth, Zachary Huseth, Christina Huseth, George Mousa, and Anthony Sanchez. Helen is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Sameera Murad, Judy Mousa, and Marlene Mousa, as well as many cherished great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 4, 2025, at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 5311 Mercer, Houston, Texas 77005. The funeral service will be at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will include family members and close family friends.
The family thanks Essential Hospice, especially Alyssa Murphy and caregiver Dawn Martin, for their support and care. We express our thanks for the outpouring of prayers, love, and support that we have received and continue to receive from our family and friends during this difficult time.
