Hi Mouse!

 I hope you are doing well and know that I still think and talk about you often despite not even being in Houston anymore. 

I still have the drawing you made for me and I keep it safe with all my other letters and notes from my loved ones. It gives me peace that I have something physical to be a reminder of you despite knowing I will never actually forget you. I think about you whenever the weather is cool and gentle or when sun beams filters through leaves and the breeze makes them twinkle. That was the type of gentleness your soul had . On those days, I like to imagine  you are stopping by to say hello.

I miss you a lot and hope you continue to feel our love.

It’s your birthday!

Today, I’m going line dancing for you. I remember we used to listen to old country music together, talk about how sweet or crazy some of the lyrics were. You used to tell me I should dance more, and I said I would knowing full well I was too shy to. Today I’m making good on that empty promise for you. 

I miss you more than I can put into words, and though I know in time it’ll get easier, I’ll carry you with me everywhere anyway. The sky is clear today, I like to think you did that for me. Somehow, giving a gift to someone else on your birthday seems so much like you lol.

Wishing you the most wonderful, most nefarious 19 ever. Tonight I’ll dance extra hard just for the both of us.

I’m deeply saddened when I heard the news of your passing, I didn’t find out until earlier this year because we had lost contact after middle school. You were my first best friend ever, elementary besties. I will never forget the memories we shared. I remembered you really loved stitch and you would always make  a stitch voice. Everytime I see a stitch plushie, It would always remind me of you.You look beautiful in all of your pictures , rest easy 🩷

I haven’t spoken to you since our departure of middle school and unfortunately lost touch during the pandemic, however I want to appreciate the friendship we had when we were in middle school and how kind you were to all of us. I still remember moments we had with our friend group and fun things we did. I still have a video project you asked me to make and I cherish it deeply. Every time I watch it I get reminded of you and how happy you were to see it.  Unfortunately recently I found out you passed away and I wish I was able to speak to you again after the years. I hope you rest calmly and I’m happy you were surrounded by great people. 🩷

To Mouse,

I still think about you every day, I’m sorry that you had to go so soon, but I cherish the short while we spent together. I know that I’m not the only one who thinks about you and I hope that you can feel our love.

To Mouse’s Family:

I know the anniversary can be hard mentally and emotionally but I want you to know that they are loved very dearly by their friends. I keep Mouse and you in my thoughts.

I wish I had photos with her and of her, but I found one from December of 2021. I felt like everyone was happy in this moment so I took a picture. 

Mouse wasn’t on Instagram much, and once she needed someone she saw in the hallways found, so we took to my account and poured over tagged posts until we saw said person. I don’t remember what was so funny, maybe besides the situation itself, but we laughed the whole time, and I still have the screenshots I took that day. When she was on Instagram, she sent me reels about the books we both liked. 

And Mouse had a deep love for horses, as I learned at our trip to Camp for All, when she pointed out each one she saw and identified its breed. She was so excited that day as we waited in line to mount what she hoped was one of the paint horses. Mouse loved Marvel and when we talked about the comics, which I had such little knowledge of compared to her, she was ecstatic; very few Marvel fans she encountered read the comics, even in small bits like I did, according to Mouse. We promised to trade, her giving me Spider Man ones from her uncle to exchange with my Captain and Ms. Marvel.  

Mouse remains one of the best people I have ever known. She was a light to all of us on the gloomiest of days and I cannot express how much I miss her voice in the Creative Writing living room, accent or no; the knowledge that she was in our presence; seeing glimpses of her from Ms. Rolater’s class next door; videos and messages from her on my phone when I opened it. Mouse was not a surface-level friend, but someone who supported me and encouraged me through some of the darkest moments of my life, and when I hit milestones in recovery she was there to celebrate each one—this was not a unique experience to me, though it meant the world. She was just good, to everyone she encountered. 

Mouse, you are a true blessing to have the memory of, to hold past experiences with, and to cherish forever. I know your light is only burning brighter now. ♥️

I may have not known her too well, but I could tell her heart was pure. She was always kind and supportive, she always took the time to try and understand, and she always lightened the mood no matter the situation. I couldn't believe it when i got the news, I'm so sorry for your loss. Her memory will be cherished and never forgotten.

To me, she was Mouse but to many she was Mylah, an amazing person. She was funny, sweet, smart and all around a really good friend. She helped me with school work and always tried helping me when I'd go through a rough patch and even if she was busy she'd always get back to me. Myself and everyone she knew on her game will definitely miss her, she'll always live on in our hearts and our minds. May she rest in peace. 🌹

I was lucky to know Mouse and call her a friend. She was such a kind person and was always there for me. She was so funny and always had the purest intentions with the things she did. We had physics together this year, and I know she loved this class. She talked about wanting to be a mechanical engineer one day. I hope she has the peace that she granted us all.

She was a wonderful sweet girl, and will be missed so so much.

On one of our First Fridays in the Creative Writing department, our group went to explore downtown Houston and this is one of the photos we took of that day. Mouse was such a good friend and so fun to be around. ❤️

I miss you, kid. Miss you so much. Wait for me on the other side, cause old gramps still has a couple more years left of life in him. He’ll tell all sorts of stories about you. 

 I’ll never forget you.

This is a drawing of a fluffy cow Mouse drew one time when we were in the Denney together back in April or May this year. She asked me beforehand what she should draw, and I told her to draw a fluffy cow as I looked for a song to sing with her. This was the result. I remember she was super ashamed of it and didn't like it, but I did, and I kept on telling her I loved it. After some friendly arguing, she said I could keep it if I wanted it. And I did, and I remember telling her "I would hang it up in my room in spite of her spoiling La La Land for me", and actually doing it that night. I never told her I actually did it, because I knew she'd probably get embarrassed, but it's still up on my wall next to my desk and I always think about her everytime I look at it. <3

Dear Mouse, 

you were my first breath of spring. A stunning gold marigold in a sea of lilies. You were truly, one of the most gorgeous human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. And I remember I would always be listening in to your conversations in Spanish 2 class last year and always trying not to laugh at every one of your hilarious jokes but still end up failing anyway. And then, when I got the chance to sit next to you and was gifted the opportunity to get to know you, nothing could have ever prepared me for the  happiness I felt from seeing you in the halls and seeing your smile, sharing conversations with you and hearing your extremely contagious laugh, singing with you during Spanish 2 and the Denney and hearing your voice not crack at all while mine did, dancing to one of your favorite songs: Ven a mi by Jay Perez with very bad choreography and lots of tripping and lots of  laughs, and so many more memories that I can't help but treasure within me. You were a safe place for many, and you have taught me things I will always be grateful for. And I'm afraid that no amount of words I use could live up to your beauty, yet I must thank you for being in my life. I miss you, and I wish you could've had more time to show the world who you were.  I love you Mouse, and I promise always will keep you close to my heart.

Dear Mouse,

I’m going to treasure the last time I saw you walking down the hallway with one of your friends. I said my silly line, the one you and many of your friends have heard before:
 “Hey, lovers!” I said it expecting the smile you always shared with me because you knew that’s what friends do, they love each other, they support each other.  

Last year, while you were in my class, you were always that kind of friend. You were ready to help your team, ready to answer questions, ready to laugh, and ready to do your best. 

I have missed and I will miss your doodles on the tests, your quick smile, your smart comments, and saying hello to you in the hallways. Mouse, wherever you are, keep bringing joy to those around you!

My last strong memory of mouse was last Wednesday. I was cold so she offered me her jacket. It kept me warm all of first period. 

In 10th grade, they brought a stuffed black mouse to school and said I could hold on to it for the day. I took it home and made it a fancy Cheese themed top hat for it to wear. 

Some time in 9th or 10th grade, Ana Karen made mouse and I  swans out of folded bits of paper. Mine was green with a pink underbelly and theirs was pink with a green underbelly. My swan still sits on my desk in my room. It holds my pencils for me.

The news still feels unreal and hard to believe. But then I read all of these beautiful notes, stories and tributes and I face the facts. I feel privileged to be related to you Mylah. 
You touched so many people with your smile, your sharp wit and your mischievous grin. You were so smart, loving and so talented.  And most of all you were loved by so many people! 
 You will be missed. 
In the meantime watch over your family as angels do.

My beautiful grandaughter you were the best of us warm and caring  towards me, we would act fools and dance, sing ,have a good time we did not care who was watching.  Most of the time you were my shotgun on our trips to see your Super Welos in San Antonio. I will always cherish our trip to Colorado / New Mexico. It appears that while you were shy when younger you still touched a lot of people as you grew older.  I will foerever be lost without you Mylah Mouse.

These are some pieces that Mouse made for me. 

I am sending my love and condolences to the family. I'm a consultant at PVA who met Mouse her freshman year in my intro fiction class. Mouse meant a lot to me. All last year when I wasn't teaching her in any of my classes she would always saunter into my classroom with a smirk on her face, calling out the nickname she gave me, "Rotater," and check up on what I was doing. This year I've had the privilege of teaching her in two classes, the fiction workshop and an elective on Disney. Mouse was the number one Disney enthusiast and after an exercise where we had to talk about which Disney character best represented us, she brought in stickers of Disney characters that she passed out to everyone--I still have mine, Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," on my phone. Mouse said she would "be Vanellope from 'Wreck-it-Ralph'. I’d say this because to others I am super chaotic and strive to be the best I can be for myself." When Mouse did a presentation on the evolution of Mickey Mouse, I learned that Mickey is her partial namesake. The last day I saw her, she read her final creative project to the Disney class--she wrote the cutest script for a Mickey Mouse cartoon from the 1930s era with Minnie saving Mickey and Pluto from a swarm of bees. 

Mouse was a shining, positive, energetic presence, and though it's impossible to imagine going on without her, she will always be with us, and I will be forever grateful that I got to know her. For an exercise in the fiction class, the students had to write sentences describing a dollhouse in ways that would evoke different emotions, and this was Mouse's example for "sad": "I couldn’t bear to look at it, it reminded me too much of her light smile, and happy dances. I shouldn’t have lost her so soon."

I have so many memories. I remember the day your freshman year I made you laugh so hard you had to spit your sweet tea out, and how frequently you would reference that even months after, and I remember that time in November we called until 3 AM laughing and talking about life. I remember all our lunchtime conversations, surrounded by our friends. I will always remember our endless calls, and our times playing videogames past anytime someone should. I remember that time you pretended to be outraged when you found out I still kept all those drawings you had given me, and I remember the hundreds of times I’d catch you trying to steal my backpack or keychain from me as a joke, always threatening I’d find it in a trashcan sooner or later. Everyday I’d arrive to creative writing and join you with our friends, laughing and chatting about whatever topic our group found that day. At lunch, after I’d eat my food or finish whatever tutorials or task I had, I’d go and find you and we’d chat, whether you were with our friends or in a classroom trying to do work until I’d distract you with cheesy jokes. We bonded almost instantly over our interests last year, you being the only person at the school that was more of a fan of Disney than me.

From the moment we started talking almost two years ago I knew you'd be one of my closest friends. You were someone I could truly trust to always be pure good in this world and were one of the most supportive and caring persons I know. You made an imprint on my life that nobody else could, one that’ll always be there, and I’ll always miss you Mylah. Your friends all miss you Mylah, and you will always be on our minds.

My heart is so heavy.  On Thursday afternoon, Mouse walked into class and asked me "Is today a good day!?" Excitement beamed from her smile because she knew I loved the rain. I told her it was an amazing day because, when it rained, it meant the world was working.  I'm not so sure what to think of that moment now, but I'm glad I have that memory. 

Dear Mouse, 
From the start of the year, you were such an incredibly welcoming and kind human. In just a few months we shared so many lovely conversations of Disney and literature. Thank you so much for all the lovely drawings, like this one, and the stickers. Now, every time I watch a Disney movie, I will think of you.  Thank you for being such a bright light. We will miss you.

There’s a gaping whole in my heart where you should be, I still don’t know how to find the words or even how to express it. It’s people like you I only I find once in a lifetime, I was so fortunate to have met you, but to be your friend was a honour I will carry with me forever. mouse and I built a fort together at camp for all. our strategy was flimsy, but mouse didn't hesitate to crawl under the cardboard and fold into awkward positions to support our fort while the rest of us taped the cardboard together. mouse was an amazing support, and a light to all who were lucky enough to know her.

She made me this birthday card with a drawing of me and had people sign it in Spanish class our freshmen year. I remember her dancing with the Spanish teacher and making her laugh with her silly voice impressions.
At the bottom she wrote “Happy B-Day to u Happy B-Day to u You look like a monkey Go back to the zoo Thank u for everything!”
The torn yellow sticky note says “good” with an arrow, which she put on me in class.

She made these doodles. The writing at the top right corner say “Born Ready Enough To” and I don’t know what the last word is.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Mouse was so kind, thoughtful, and giving. I am a consultant at HSPVA, and I met Mouse in the fall of 2021 during my Tactile Techniques class. When she finished a project, she would spend her free time drawing things or making gifts for the other students. She confided in me and made me feel like I was actually making a difference as a teacher. My classroom will forever be dimmer without her in it.

the second week of freshman year it went like this: you told me you’d be my friend. i said i “wasn’t used to doing friends”. and you said something along the lines of : “well, get used to it.” 

you were the first friend i ever made at HSPVA and my dearest from then on. even looking at this obituary, at the funeral dates, at the condolences and pictures, it still doesn’t feel real at all. i refresh constantly, hoping this is some kind of sick joke, but it’s not. it isn’t. you’re gone. 

but mouse: you were a person who held so many wild dreams, so many rollicking laughs, so many shining smiles. you joked and bounced from side to side when excited. to say you were one of the kindest people I have ever met would be a gross understatement. you were a person of such boundless love, and you made sure we all knew it.  your warmth, your insight, your creativity, your compassion, your singing voice as we walked down the halls with Johnny Serrano singing ABBA’s “Money, Money, Money”, calling me, Mateo, and yourself “The  Golden Trio” after Harry Potter, rolling down the hill at Discover Green, you fooling with my phone that Wednesday in Physics, you saying you and I would match Halloween costumes the afternoon before you died - all of those wonderful shards of you will be cherished by not only me, but all who ever had the courage to know you.  you brought a flurry of color and whimsy and joy that will take an eternity to replace.  

in short (you always made fun of me for my long paragraphs) you made the world beautiful. and I love you more than you could ever dream to conceive.  we all do. 

and i know you’re kickin’ it in Heaven, laughing down at me.

I am so sorry for your loss. Our family wishes to thank you for sharing Mouse with us. She meant so much to our daughter, Grace. We spoke of her fondly and often in our home because Grace loved her so. Her light will forever shine and she will never be forgotten. We are praying for your family’s strength and comfort during this difficult time right now even as we pray for our own. We are all deeply saddened.l and we miss her so much.

The first day of school I took photos to help remember student names. It was 8th period physics and I had already seen over 100 students, but I remembered your name, Mouse, before I even took the picture. I had never taught a Mouse before. These past six weeks you always seemed to have a grin obscuring a smile just waiting to come out and when it did, we were all better for it. The first time I saw it was when I said "Hello, Mouse!" as you passed by in the hallway the second day of school to which you smiled and said "You know my name!" Sometimes it is the little things you remember, but your smile was always memorable. Thank you for your smile. Thank you for coming to class each day willing to engage and learn, even when it was difficult. Thank you for being you. I am happy for the time we had together and I wish we could have had more. Rest in peace, Mouse.

Thank you for the Panda pictures and yelling my name and every variation of it in the hallway. The best lunch distraction and the kindest person everyone deserved the privilege to know.

I love you so much Mouse. Everyone misses you and I’m grateful for the happy memories we had together. You were always there to make others laugh and feel comforted. Since the very first day we met, you were always so fun to be around and quickly became one of the lights of my life. Every day I’d look forward to seeing you and wondered about what shenanigans we’d get into together, even if that shenanigan was scrambling to read/talk about an assigned piece that we forgot existed before class. While you might not be here to share them with me anymore, I will carry your light with me everywhere, no matter what. I will forever miss you, Mouse. Thank you so much for being my friend.

You were one of my first friends at pva ever since you beat me in an arm wrestle. You were always there for me and listened to me talk about my silly little problems. You made sure I knew you cared. It’s hard to imagine going to school not being able to roam the halls with you and Lorien anymore.
