

GREEN VALLEY ~ Deral Wayne Bates, 65, of 13201 Townline Road, passed away at 8:02 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2006 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.Born September 30, 1941 in Athens, Alabama to Charlie Clayton and Effie Gertrude (Lovell) Bates, he married Cheryl Jeanene Brush on January 27, 1989 at Hannibal, Missouri. She survives. Also surviving are his mother, E. Gertrude Dismukes of Festus, Missouri; four sons, Timothy D. (Teresa) Bates of Yorktown, Texas, Thomas W. Bates of Evansville, Indiana, John E. (Yen) Bates of Little Rock, Arkansas and Matthew D. (Ann) Kirgan of Pekin; two daughters, Terri L. Potts of North Carolina and Stephanie L. (Chad) McWhirter of East Peoria; nine grandchildren and two sisters, Betty J. Marler of Festus, Missouri and G. Gail (Michael) Guilfoyle of Chillicothe. His father preceded him in death. He served with the Air Force from June 5, 1959 to June 7, 1962. Deral was a Sergeant with the Pekin Police Department, last working in 1989. He hired onto the department in 1974. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 105. He also owned and operated Bates Concrete Elevation. He previously worked for Burger Chef and then for McDonalds, both as a manager and for Caterpillar, Inc. He enjoyed construction work, including home remodeling. He loved to fish. His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2006 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Thomas R. Wenndt will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 1:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team. Law enforcement honors will be provided by the Pekin Police Department Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tazewell Animal Protective Society, 2675 Allentown Road, Pekin, IL 61554.
