

Born June 25, 1922 in Peoria to Mike and Minnie Mathews, he married his high school sweetheart Mildred O. Venovich on November 11, 1944 in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jim (Donna) Mathews of Pekin and Mike (Cindy) Mathews of East Peoria; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Mathews and Johnny Mathews; and one sister, Virginia Campbell.
He had served in the United States Marines during World War II.
Jim was employed at Caterpillar, Inc. for 25 years, retiring July 1, 1984 as an Inspector. Previously, he was a milk distributor for 20 years.
He was a member of Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1940 East Peoria football team.
Jim attended Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin and Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and following his children’s sports. Jim was a fan of the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Cubs.
Services will be private with burial following at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
