

Alvin Victor Filer Jr. of Homewood Alabama passed away October 25, 2014 at the age of 88. Born in New York City in 1926 to Alvin Victor Filer and Aletta Ehrlich Filer, he attended LaGuardia High School in New York City and graduated Columbia University in 1951 with a degree in Mining Engineering. He moved to Birmingham, Alabama to work for United States Steel in 1950. Starting in the coal and ore mines, he advanced to management in the blast furnace operations until his retirement with USS in 1982 at which time he became a Certified Financial Planner. In 1958 he married Betty Millar of Pinson Alabama and raised 3 children who survive him: Daniel Filer, David Filer and Carol Filer DeBoer and grandchildren Dylan DeBoer, Kathryn DeBoer, Sarah Filer and Abigail Filer. After divorcing in 1982 he married in 1993 and is survived by his wife Eva Lyons Smith and her children Pat Smith, Rusty Smith, Dr Phillip Smith and Elizabeth Smith Webb. Al was a member and volunteered at Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham Al. He has been active or in leadership positions in organizations including American Association of Mining Engineering, Parents Without Partners, Boy Scouts of America and in 1994 he charted the Alabama Chapter of the American Association of Individual Investors. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, furniture refinishing, family and making others laugh. He is remembered as a loving husband, father and friend to many.
Memorial service will be on November 9th, 2014 at 3:00pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Rd, Pelham, AL 35124. A reception and celebration of his life will proceed the service from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm at that location. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be addressed to Temple Emanu-El at 2100 Highland Ave S, Birmingham, AL
