Anne Joseph, age 90, lovingly known as “Matante,” went to be with the Lord on the morning of July 29, 2024 at her home in Alabaster, Alabama. She was born August 3, 1933 in La Plaine du Cul-De-Sac, Haiti, and was the second of five children of Desilus Joseph and Anaise Lumeus.
Anne is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Avena, Anna, and Emelie; and her brother, Steker. She is survived by her daughter, Yolene; her son-in-law, Jean-Francois; her granddaughter, Valerie; and her grandson, Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Yolene, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, other close relatives, and friends.
In Haiti during her teenage years, Anne went to Port au Prince to live with her aunt, Sanite Joseph. There, she learned the art of tailoring and used her creative skills to make a living for herself. She was known to tailor school uniforms for all her nieces and nephews in her care every academic year.
Anne was a devout Catholic. She believed the foundation to a strong family was God; and she instilled that in her daughter, grandchildren and all her nieces and nephews.
Anne traveled frequently to New York from Haiti for decades until she permanently settled in Alabama in August 2005.
Anne loved her family deeply and showed that love through her excitement at family gatherings, her daily phone calls to family members across the globe and through joyously distributing little packs of candy.
Anne was loved dearly by all who was fortunate enough to know her. She left a legacy of strong faith, an emphasis on education and the importance of family values.
