FUNK, CLAUDIA JUDITH (JUDY) SMITH 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7. Judy was, above all, a "people person," and gave generously of her time, concern, and support, whether on behalf of family or friends. Affectionately known as "Ran" to her grandchildren, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and a consummate homemaker most in her element when serving huge spreads to her growing "F Troop." She was also very involved in the betterment of her community. She was instrumental in the establishment and beautification of Aldridge Gardens and was a sponsor for the Hoover Belles, a civic group representing the city of Hoover. She was a member of the Star Lakes Garden Club, The Oaks Townhouse Association, and the Riverchase Women's Club serving each organization in a variety of offices. In addition, she was an avid bridge player and a member of the Birmingham Bridge Club. Survivors include her mother, Evelyn L. Smith of Hoover, husband O. David Funk and her children Alison McGill of Pelham, Lori Douglas of Irving, TX, and John Funk of Hoover, her sister, Margo Gibson of Thorsby, brother Jay Smith (Marie) of Jacksonville, FL, and grandchildren Alan, Claudia, and Trace McGill and Cameron and Blake Douglas, along with numerous extended family members. She is preceded in death by her father, Lt. Col. Claude J. Smith, whose military career took Judy and her siblings to many places such as Ft. Monroe, Virginia, where she met David Funk, her future husband and the love of her life for 54 years. Judy had a great love of life and wonderful, quirky sense of humor, at once down-to-earth and optimistic. Some of her frequently used expressions were "It is what it is," "There you go," (when someone got it right) and "We're not going to have a pity party." She will be remembered for her infectious laughter, ability to make people immediately at ease, and her warmth, sincerity, and high spirit. She brought to life a sense of joy which will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life service will be held February 10, at 3:00 pm at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel on Cahaba Valley Road in Pelham. The family requests no flowers and that any memorial gifts be made to Aldridge Gardens of Hoover.
