Cornelia Ann Jeffcoat of Hoover, Alabama was born on October 24, 1941 and passed away on February 22, 2022. She is survived by her son Wendell (Jeff) Jeffcoat Jr., who was holding her hand as she took her last breath, her daughter-in-law Melanie Jeffcoat, her two cherished granddaughters Seabrook Jeffcoat and Chloe Jeffcoat, her sister in law, Sally Whaley, and her neice and nephew Eleanor and Benjamin Whaley. Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Wendell Jeffcoat.
Although her birth name was Cornelia, most people called her Ann or Annie, Nelie Ann or Goldie but her Mother called her “Whaley Woo” and son called her “Wales” which always made her smile. Ann grew up in the low country of South Carolina on Wadmalaw Island, the daughter of the late Ephraim Clark Whaley and the late Cornelia Jenkins. She was the only girl in the family and adored her three brothers Ben, Eph and Henry. She spent her youth playing in the Bohicket Creek and basking in the attention as one of the prettiest girls in town. She graduated from Winthrop College and met the love of her life Wendell Jeffcoat and they married in 1961 and soon after welcomed their son Jeff. The family lived in Columbia, SC, Jackson Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama before settling in Hoover, AL. Ann loved to golf and would be the first to let you know that she was GOOD at it and she loved to be out on the course with her friends and then enjoying a nice post-game sweet tea at her Inverness Club. Ann was a hostess extraordinaire and if you were lucky enough to be invited to one of her elegantly appointed dinner parties, well, you were lucky indeed. She made everyone feel welcome and loved to have company and treated her guests like royalty. Ann and Wendell travelled the world together after he retired from ServiceMaster. The two had incredible adventures abroad and her stories from those trips were legendary. After Wendell’s passing, Ann continued to golf with her friends, met up with some of her “merry widows” and spent as much time as she could with her granddaughters.
Following the deaths of their spouses, Ann and Willie Edmiston developed a sweet and loving relationship. They thought highly of one another and each other’s families and shared laughter and company for the last seven years of Ann’s life.
Ann was a character who loved to laugh and loved to make people laugh even more—even if that laughter was at her own expense. Her musical South Carolina lilt was as beautiful to listen to as it was fun to imitate—and she LOVED to hear herself imitated, specially by her funny and sweet granddaughters. Anyone who spent time with Ann in the last 22 years heard about Seabrook and Chloe. She was incredibly proud of them and wanted the world to know it. Ann will be deeply missed. Her death came quickly after a brain bleed followed by a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
A celebration of Ann Jeffcoat’s life will be held at Crosscreek Baptist Church on March 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM. There will be a livestream available on the Crosscreek Facebook Page and their Youtube page.
