The memorial service for "Don" Halvorson will begin at 2 p.m. CST on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1074 Dunnavant Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. The family will visit with friends at the church after the service.
Don graduated from Elbow Lake High School and attended North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years from 1960 to 1966.
He married Edith Elizabeth "Liz" Hansen from Donnybrook, North Dakota on July 5, 1958. They were happily and proudly married for 66 years.
In addition to Liz, Don is survived by two sons, David, age 59, and Jon, 54; and four grandchildren, Matthew, 31, Michael (Amanda), 30, Ainsley, 18, and Evan, 17. Don is also survived by his sister, Margaret Donley, 85, who resides in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
Don and Liz, soon after their wedding, moved to New Jersey, where he was employed by Shell Oil in New York City. His office was located at 30 Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan. After seven years in the Big Apple, he and Liz returned to Minnesota, where he was hired by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company. From there, he was transferred to Des Moines, Iowa, and subsequently Houston, Texas.
He then became a partner in a beer distributorship in Fort Bend County southwest of Houston. For the next several years, Fort Bend was one of the fastest growing counties in the United States.
In 2002, Don retired from the beer industry after 30 years. His dedication and hard work resulted in his distributorship growing and merging with many other brands of beer.
Don and Liz's sons brought them in 2012 to the Birmingham area, where the couple resided in Mt. Laurel and attended Our Savior Lutheran Church. They remained at their home until Don's passing. He will be greatly missed and cherished.
