Edgar ("Ed") Hamer Woods Jr., 89, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026. Born on February 25, 1937, in Sylacauga, Alabama, Ed lived a life defined by devotion to his faith, his family, and his community.
Ed was a proud graduate of Auburn University, where he earned his degree in industrial engineering. He went on to build a distinguished career as a sales engineer with the Trane Corporation, where he spent the majority of his professional life. Ed also honorably served his country in the Army Reserves.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ed was a man of deep faith and generous spirit. He was an active and beloved member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama, where he served on the building committee responsible for constructing the current sanctuary and faithfully served as an usher for many years. Ed also dedicated his time to mentoring young men as a Boy Scout Troop Leader, leaving a lasting impression on all those he guided.
Ed's greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his friends and family. For 63 wonderful years, he was married to the love of his life, Barbara Tarsi Woods, who was his constant companion and partner in all things. When he wasn't surrounded by loved ones, Ed could often be found cheering on Auburn sports or enjoying a round of golf, two passions he pursued with enthusiasm throughout his life.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Hamer Woods and Doris Darden Woods, and his sister, Jeanette “Jet” Woods Adams. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his three children, Edgar Hamer Woods III, Denise Woods Oliver (Thomas "Tom" Lee Oliver II), and Beverly Woods Barry; six grandchildren, Katie Woods Hunter, Thomas Lee ("Trey") Oliver III, Britney Oliver Barnes, Tarsi Woods Stockhausen, Jack Dennis Smith ("Jackson") Barry III, and Sara Elizabeth Barry; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and his sister, Merle Woods Watson.
Funeral arrangements will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama with visitation at 10:00 am followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church or to the ALS Association (in recognition of Jet).
Ed's warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him will be deeply missed. His legacy of faith, service, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. War Eagle, Ed.
