Edmund Wells Roberts

Edmund Wells Roberts, 90, of Pelham, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Alberta Roberts, and his wife, Barbara Ann Baker Roberts.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Hildegard Ibs Roberts; daughter, Neena Gretchen (Martin) Connell; son, Edmund Keith (Donna) Roberts; and grandchildren, Corey Wells Roberts and Adam Keith Roberts.

A private family “Celebration of Life” service will be held graveside at Jones Bailey Cemetery in Calera, Alabama, and will be officiated by Dr. T. Michael Morgan.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cahaba Heights Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, or to a charity of your choice.

Ed wore many hats throughout his life: husband, father, grandfather, gardener, musician, choir director, insurance agent, world traveler, incredible chef, and those whose lives he touched will all agree, animated storyteller. After graduating from Montevallo High School in 1950, he attended Birmingham Southern College and Conservatory, where he studied music. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was an agent at State Farm Insurance for 35 years.

Ed was successful at any endeavor he pursued. His work ethic and tenacity were never out of self-interest; the spirit that drove him was a service to others. Ever humble and appreciative, he was one of the most understanding, patient, and charitable men one could meet.

Even in his final days when energy was low, Ed's spirits were high. His concerns were not of his own comfort, but of the needs of family and friends. His characteristic blend of dry wit and goofball humor never faded. To the very end, he could still slip a joke out with a slight wink at those who caught it. That jovial spirit perhaps embodies him more than any other quality.

Ed was a multi-talented and well-rounded individual who will forever be loved and missed (and so will his homemade bread).
