He married Joan Tye in February, 1953 and together, they raised their son, Ed and their daughter, Lynn.
Gene was a mechanical engineer in the Birmingham area. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Vestavia Hills united Methodist Church and valued the relationships formed there.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ed Roberts and K. Lynn (Steve R.) Swartley, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00am on Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. Chapel service at 11:00am and burial to follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
Gene’s grandson, the Reverend Matthew Roberts will officiate.
