Gordon was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Lurleen "Sis" Garrett; son-in-law, Ralph Fulton; and grandson, Michael Carter. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Fulton; a son, Lane Garrett (Gwen); four grandchildren, Neely Franks (Paul), Laney Beard (Allen), Vicki Garrett (Edward Chauca), and Samantha Garrett (JP Rowan); great-grandchildren, Haley Motes (Shawn), Garrett Franks, Harrison Franks, Parker Franks, Addie Grace Beard, and Maya Chauca Garrett; and great-great-grandchildren, Sadie, SJ, Dawson, and Colt Motes.
Gordon graduated from Fairfield High School and was a World War II Veteran. After the war, he went to college briefly, and then began his career as a machinist with U.S. Steel, where he retired after 38 years.
On June 27, 1948, he married his childhood sweetheart Sis, officially Lurleen. They centered their lives around the United Methodist Church, and everyone knew which seats were theirs, as parents and later grandparents.
When he retired, Gordon was active in the church's Keenagers Group and began driving groups from Keenagers, Red Hatters, and Shelby County Seniors on excursions. He also drove a Red Cross Bloodmobile all over the state. He was never happier than when someone needed directions for a road trip anywhere in the country. He loved hearing the details of all of his grandkids' trips.
Sis and Gordon loved to square dance in several clubs and to take the grandchildren on trips. For many years, family holidays were spent at Sis and Gordon's house or around the pool Gordon built after he retired. One day, he decided to make porch swings and trays for all of the ladies to carry food into his house.
The graveside service for Gordon L. Garrett will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr Drive, Birmingham, AL 35211. Pastor Clay Farrington will officiate.
