Larry, aka "Unc" and "Bird," attended Auburn University after graduating from Ramsey High School, Birmingham. He was employed for several years in the sports industry. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit and for being an avid sports junky. He was an especially passionate fan of Alabama Crimson Tide Football.
Bird was predeceased by his parents, Ida Richardson Jewell and James Arthur Jewell; one brother, Robert "Bobby" T. Jewell (wife Rita); and grand-nephew, Thomas Lee.
Survivors include Bird's sister, Joyce Jewell Lee; two nephews, James Michael Lee (wife Crystal) and Dale Laromie Lee (wife Felicia), whom he helped Joyce raise as his own sons; nephews, Billy, Jesse, and Shane; grand-nephews, James Lee and Brandon Tennyson; long-time family friends, Ernestine Jones and Melisha Jones, who were close to his heart; and his cherished dogs and cat, Sophie, Prince, Miller, Deacon, Harley, and Monkey.
The family and friends will celebrate James Larry Jewell's life at an informal gathering from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Come for a lot of laughter, storytelling about Bird, and his favorite card game, Black Jack!
