James Thomas "Tommy" Poe, age 65, of Alpine, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 4, 2022 after exploratory surgery. His partner, Enid Sikes, and his sister, Elizabeth Poe-Hogan, were at his bedside.
After being told he had only a few hours to live, Tommy promptly asked his doctor to change the TV channel to wrestling. He proudly talked about his Atlanta Braves baseball team going to the World Series.
Tommy was born May 1, 1957 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Willie Clay Poe and Annie Ruth Moore Poe. Most of his childhood years were spent in Atlanta, Georgia, where he played All Stars baseball with the Babe Ruth League and achieved Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.
As a teenager, Tommy returned with his family to Birmingham and married his high school sweetheart, Tammy Bigham, whom he had known since they were 4 months old. It was destiny!
While residing in Chelsea, Alabama, Tommy and Tammy were blessed in 1985 with the birth of their only child, Eric Anthony Poe. Tommy loved being a dad!
Tommy retired from Davis Transportation after several years with Publix distribution. When he wasn't trucking, he was an endeavorous entrepreneur, buying and selling vehicles, growing his firewood business's thriving clientele, and managing house rental properties.
Tommy was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Tammy Gail Bigham-Poe, and aunts and uncles.
Survivors include Tommy's parents, Willie and Ruth Poe of Irondale, Alabama; one son, Eric Anthony Poe (Christine) of Tempe, Arizona; one sister, Elizabeth Poe-Hogan (Lee) of Gulf Shores, Alabama; Tommy's doting and loving partner, Enid Sikes of Alpine; and Tommy's former daughter-in-law of Alpine, Amber Ward-Poe (Jorge), whom he loved as a daughter and trusted to settle his estate upon his death. Also left to cherish memories of Tommy are his four grandchildren, Damein and Draven Poe, and Frank and Tristen Poe; nephew, Leon Hogan; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
Tommy's family and friends will gather for the graveside service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Wooten's Chapel Cemetery in the Cahaba Heights community of Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Children's Hospital of Alabama, https://www.childrensal.org/foundation. Tommy actively supported Children's Hospital, Birmingham since one of his grandsons underwent a heart transplant there two years ago.
