Janet was born in Decatur, Alabama on July 1, 1954. She was a graduate of Calhoun Community College as well as Athens State University with a bachelors in business administration. She later served as a Journeyman with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in the Bahamas, and then completed a masters in Christian Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Janet was married to Monte D. Erwin on August 8, 1987, and together they served as international missionaries with the Southern Baptist Convention in both the Caribbean region and in Latvia. She also served for 12 years as the editor of Missions Mosaic Magazine of Woman's Missionary Union, SBC, and two years at The Alabama Baptist Media Group, both in Birmingham, Alabama.
Janet was involved in the Pelham Library Guild as a great proponent of reading and education. Her passion was in doing missionary work as well as missions education. She loved being a grandmother to her two grandchildren, Meredith and Micah, engaging in crafts with them, decorating cookies, and teaching them easy recipes in the kitchen. She also had a tremendous love for sewing and quilting through which she gave of herself as a gesture of love to others in making and giving away many of her quilts for different reasons and occasions.
No one was more of a fan of Auburn Tigers football and basketball than Janet. She extended that love and passion to her grandkids as well and was delighted when they would sit and watch a basketball game with her and cry out, “War Eagle!”
Janet is survived by her husband, Monte Erwin; two sons, Trey and Trent Erwin; her grandchildren, Meredith and Micah Erwin; and her brothers, Scott and Kenny Herbert.
