

Imogene “Jean” Browne Summer, 95, of Montgomery, AL died peacefully on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 with some of her family at her side in Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Peter D. Summer, her oldest daughter Pat Cervera of Troy, AL, her brother Jack Browne of Brighton, MI and her sister Elizabeth Dickinson of Smyrna, GA. She is survived by her one son, David (Dotty) Summer of Colorado Springs, CO, four daughters Ellen Gonzalez of Norcross, GA, Betty (Steve) Smith of Huntsville, AL, Melinda (Dave) Moorehouse of Alabaster, AL, Becky (Ed) Denton of Birmingham, AL, one son-in-law, Nick Cervera of Troy, AL, 14 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. Jean was born in Tuscaloosa, AL on June 6, 1921 to Ruby and L.O. Browne. She studied Home Economics at the University of Alabama before moving to Birmingham where she began working for Southern Bell Telephone Company. After transferring to Mobile, AL with the phone company, she met her future husband Pete, a former phone company employee who was visiting the office while home on leave. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on March 16, 1945, whereupon they enjoyed 65 wonderful years of marriage. Being the wife of an Air Force officer, she moved numerous times with her family before they were stationed in Montgomery and retired there, where she lived 42 years. She was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery, where she received great joy teaching many in Sunday School, especially third graders. Those who knew and loved her always saw a loving, sweet and godly spirit as she knew the Lord as her personal Savior from a very early age. She found pleasure in sewing, quilting, reading, gardening and being the loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Montgomery in her name. The memorial service will be Saturday, November 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home Chapel in Pelham with Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. The graveside service will follow on Monday, November 21 at 10:15 a.m. at the National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. Her grandsons will be the pallbearers.
