Jimmie Louise Godsey Sherman
1937 - 2022
Jimmie Sherman of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2022. She devoted her life to her family and kept the family Bible opened to Proverbs 31: 23-31, the words that guided her life’s work.
From her Papa Godsey, she learned to appreciate the beauty of nature, the curiosity for knowledge and wisdom, and the respect for our nation and those that serve to protect it. Along with her beloved husband, Dave, she helped instill and nurture those same values into their six children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Jimmie created a home remembered for its welcoming and generous hospitality that was filled with uplifting music, delicious food, and the sharing of experiences that brought us together. Her greatest legacy is her family’s continuation of these virtues.
Jimmie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Artivee Langston Godsey; her brothers, Olan Godsey, Davis Godsey, and Raymond Hershel Godsey; her sister, Mavis Frederick; and her husband, William David Sherman. She is survived by her six children, Connie Sheffield, Beckey (Bob) Brantley, Mick Sutherland, Laura (Jason) Aiken, Michael (Kathy) Sherman, and Marcy (Houston) Miller; numerous grandchildren, including Katie (Davy) Pitts, Michael James (Suzanne) Sutherland, Diana (Lawrence) Becker, Christopher John Sutherland, Lawrence (Frances) Sheffield IV, Glenda (Branden) Jeffers, Laura Anne Sutherland, Robby Brantley, Richard Franklin Tucker Jr., Anna Katherine Sherman, Grace Sherman, Alexander Sherman, Caroline Sherman, Bryce Miller, Hayes Miller, Jason Aiken Jr., Hunter Aiken, Jimmie Aiken, and Emily Aiken; and seven great-grandchildren, Piper Leigh Pitts, Pierson Becker, Liam Bruce Jeffers, Alyssa May Sutherland, Logan Jay Jeffers, Gray Louise Sheffield, and Savannah Rae Sutherland; her sisters, Beulah Armstrong and Neatia Daddis; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Monday, March 29, 2022 from 9-10:30 a.m. The gravesite committal service will be at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, March 29, 2022 at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo, with the Reverend Josiah Rengers officiating.
