Joe Curtis Turpin, Jr.

In his profession as a home builder, in his many civic involvements, and in his personal life, he was much loved by all who knew him.

At age 15, Curtis began working in the construction industry. After graduating from Shades Valley High School, he began his own drywall business. In 1980, he founded T&T Quality Homes, which has developed several Birmingham-area, residential subdivisions, including Meadowbrook, Brook Highlands, and Greystone.

At Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Curtis was a faithful member of the Deeper Life Sunday School Class. He loved vegetable gardening, was an avid craftsman.

Predeceasing Curtis were his parents, Curtis Turpin Sr. and Julia Watkins Turpin; one sister, Ann Turpin Scott; and brothers-in-law, Jim Walker, Richard Farren, and Jessie Scott.

Survivors include Curtis’s wife of 66 years, Shirley Acton Turpin; one daughter, Cynthia Turpin Broach (Keith); two sons, Barry Joe Turpin (Leigh) and Tommy Edwin Turpin (Marla); nine grandchildren, Matthew Edwin Turpin (Kacy), Keri Turpin Howard (David), Jennifer Turpin Seville (King), Joseph Gaines Turpin (Karen), Dustin Michael Whatley, William Drennen Turpin (Toni), Tyler Kelley Smith (Lauren), Austin Willis Smith, and Emily Kathryn Broach; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Louise Turpin, Grace Turpin Walker, and Rosemary Turpin Farren; one brother, Michael Turpin (Stephanie); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2018 in the chapel at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, immediately followed by the 2 p.m. funeral service in the church’s chapel at 2200 Briarwood Way, Birmingham, AL 35243. Burial will be at Acton Memorial Cemetery in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Dr. Harry Reeder and Dr. Bill Fox will officiate, and Curtis’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
