John Michael Alexander, 87, of Birmingham Alabama, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 23, 2026 surrounded by family. “Pops” as he was known to family was born in Moulton, Alabama on January 8, 1939.
He was married to Mary Nell Burrow on August 29, 1964. They were happily married for 55 years and their marriage was a shining example to all who knew them of a Christ-centered marriage and devotion to one another and their family.
Pops proudly graduated from Auburn University in June 1961 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and spent his entire professional career at Alabama Power Company. He was a lifelong, active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church (now The Church at Liberty Park) where he served a variety of roles during his time there. He impacted many lives through his faith and he especially enjoyed shaping young men’s lives through his work with Royal Ambassadors.
Pops never met a stranger and enjoyed a good joke and laugh. He loved sports, especially Auburn sports, and was an avid follower of the New York Yankees. He was an excellent husband and caregiver to his beloved wife Nell, a great father and grandfather and will be missed by his family and friends.
Pops is survived by his children, Alan (Valerie) Alexander and Beth A. Cross (Adam) and his favorites, the grandchildren, Harper Knotts (Michael), Carter and Emory Alexander.
He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Jack Alexander (Edie), Catherine Bickley (Lile), Joe Alexander (Sherry), Phillip Alexander, and Sam Alexander (Ruth), and many nieces and nephews who had a special place in “Uncle Mike’s” heart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell B. Alexander, his parents Audrey and William Alexander, his brother, William “Buzz” Alexander, his sister Glenda A. Hamilton, and his sister-in-law, Jeannie B. Alexander.
The family would like to thank Kirkwood By the River, specifically the nurses on the 1st floor who called him Paw Paw, and a special thank you to Craig, his Kirkwood granddaughter, who could get him to behave when he was being feisty. Also, thank you to Southeast Hospice Network for their care of our father.
The services for Pops will be held on May 29, 2026 at The Church at Liberty Park. Visitation at 11:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life beginning at noon.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Church at Liberty Park, 12001 Liberty Parkway, Vestavia Hills, Alabama 35242.
