John Montgomery Hogewood (Monty, Dad, Pappy) of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 29, 2025, surrounded by the love and joy that his family has for him. Over his 80 years, he lived a life full of joy, encouragement, service, and selfless love.
Monty was born on August 11, 1945, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Ashley Lee Hogewood, Sr., and Dixie Duncan Hogewood. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1963 and Wake Forest University in 1967. He remained a loyal fan of the Demon Deacons for all of his days. He started his career in management with Sears in 1966. In 1992, he changed gears to fundraising and development at Samford University. During his time as a development officer, with God-given gifts of connecting with others, Monty raised millions of dollars for Samford. He was a longtime member, officer and wise mentor with the Association of Fundraising Professionals and received the William Roth Outstanding Fund Raising Professional Award. As Monty was known for his decades-long passion for all of Samford’s sports, he was inducted into Samford’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024 as the John C. Pittman Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Monty’s “Go Bulldogs” will be sorely missed in Samford’s gyms and on its fields.
Monty was a longtime member of Brookwood Baptist Church where he met and married his beloved wife of 42 years, Connie Mays Hogewood. Together they later became members of Baptist Church of the Covenant, and most recently, have served as leaders and members at First United Methodist Church in Birmingham.
Monty is sur vived by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. In 1983, Monty and Connie blended a family with their children: Mark Hogewood and his wife Catherine Loflin Hogewood; Jay Hogewood and his wife Karrie Gaspard Hogewood; Lynn Hogewood and her husband Shannon Arledge; and Amy Todd Ferrell and her husband Scott Ferrell. With no exaggeration, Monty was the perfect Pappy to his grandchildren: Beck (and Ida), Luke, Anna (and Jackson), Mariah, Mary, Grayson, Garner, Brady, Addison, and newest bonus grandchildren Emilee (and Dylan) and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his older brother, Ashley Lee Hogewood, Jr., and his wife Wanny Hogewood, and his nephews and niece, Lee and Anne Hogewood, Hunter and Jamie Yavelberg Hogewood, and Catherine and John Fowler. Monty could not have been more proud of his family.
Through his encouragement, service, presence, and participation, Monty impacted the lives of countless individuals. He never met a stranger, and he was certain to bellow a “hello” to welcome all. His exuberance for inclusion, grace, and love will not be forgotten.
The family would like to thank Dr. Allen Yeilding for his expert medical care and, most importantly, for his loving support and encouragement of Monty. In addition, the family is eternally grateful for the nurses, techs, and crew of the 7th floor at Brookwood Hospital and the nurses and staff with Hematology and Oncology Associates of Alabama.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 with visitation beginning at 10:00 am followed by a service at 11:00 am at First Church United Methodist, 518 19th Street North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wake Forest Fund of Wake Forest University, the Cumberland School of Law Academic Success Program, First Church Birmingham, UAB School of Nursing Scholarship Fund, or Mitchell’s Place in Birmingham, Alabama, all in memory of Monty Hogewood.
