Loujean B. Hutchison left us this past Saturday, 12/13/14. We were totally unprepared for her departure and will miss her dearly. The fact that she was in the midst of preparing for a family Christmas when she was taken truly says much about what she was to her family during her life.
Loujean was age 85, born 2/15/29. She and her husband Tooter were part of that group of Americans we call the Greatest Generation. She grew up in Birmingham with her sisters Julia and Beverly and graduated from Thompson High School. She met her husband when he returned from WWII. After a brief courtship, they were married in 1947 and remained that way for 60 years until Tooter passed away in 2007.
This union produced one son and two daughters. They, in turn, brought four grandchildren and four great grandchildren to the family. This was, annually, the makeup of the previously mentioned family Christmas.
Loujean had many interests that have created many memories. She liked to sew and quilt which she did with friends at Pelham United Methodist Church. She loved to read and was the library for the family who all traded books with her. She could do a substantial amount of cooking and enjoyed the labor. The family always enjoyed the eating.
To sum her up, she was short in stature. But she was an incredibly strong woman who communicated that strength to her children and grandchildren. Her words were, “Get yourself together!” She meant whatever life served up, deal with it. There was no self-pity in her or her house.
She was a pillar of strength for her family, one that will be missed and cannot be replaced.
Visitation is at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Wednesday 12/17/14, from 10 to 11am. This will be follow by a service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Alabama Animal Rescue.
