Margaret Ruth Alexander Fulton was born in Flomaton, Alabama. After their mother’s early death, she and her 2 brothers were raised by their grandparents. Margaret Ruth graduated from Baldwin County High School in 1943, and immediately went to work as a secretary at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile. Within a year she was secretary to the Base Commander. In 1944, during a traffic stop, she met a handsome State Trooper named Bo Fulton, and they were soon married. While living in Mobile, they had 2 children, Amanda in 1949, and William in 1954.
The family moved to Birmingham, where Margaret Ruth began her career at “the telephone company”. In an era when most women worked only at home, Margaret Ruth achieved significant levels of responsibility at what became BellSouth. Over time, she worked as secretary to the president, a management trainer across the Southeast, and, after 33 years’ service, retired as office manager of the legal department.
Along the way, she managed to be sure that William and Amanda finished college. And still she had the drive and energy for meaningful volunteer jobs. She taught MYF at Trinity UMC, was a member of the Homewood Park Board, and visited hospital patients with the UAB Auxillary. She and Bo were founding members of a new Methodist congregation that became Riverchase UMC, and with John and Alice Everage and a small group of dedicated workers, helped to grow that church family.
Margaret Ruth and her beloved Bo tailgated at every Alabama football game, and travelled the USA in their Airstream travel trailer, often in the company of their “inlaws and outlaws”, the Robins-Williams clan.
Margaret Ruth adored her grandchildren, John and Sarah Williams, and was proud of all their accomplishments. But Bo was the center of her life, her “moon and stars”. Now that they are reunited, the circle of her life is complete, and she can rest. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”.
Mrs. Fulton is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin P. “Bo” Fulton; parents, Walter Silsbee Alexander and Mamie Louise Hall Alexander; brothers, Howell Silsbee Alexander and Gerald Alexander. She is survived by her children, Amanda Fulton Williams and William Alexander Fulton (Ronald Meredith); and grandchildren, Sarah Williams Clausen (Jack Clausen) and John Michael Williams.
The celebration of Margaret Ruth’s life will be at 11am on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, with Rev. Nancy Harper (RUMC) officiating. The family will receive friends at a visitation beginning at 9am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local homeless shelter.
