AVIS DE DÉCÈS
15 avril 1937 – 17 mai 2020
Mary Jackson Stallworth Bowman, age 83, went to be with the Lord on May 17, 2020. Surrounded by loved ones, she peacefully left her earthly home in Indian Springs, AL. She was the widow of Haskins Williams Bowman, and they shared 41 years of marriage until his death in 2004.
Born in Canoe, AL, she was the daughter of James Jackson and Mary Margaret Stallworth. Her family moved to Fort Payne, AL when she was a young girl. She often told happy stories of her childhood days spent in Canoe and Fort Payne, where she was blessed to have extended family nearby. She graduated from Dekalb County High School in 1954, with a class that still reunites annually, and went on to earn a degree in bacteriology from The University of Alabama. She worked as a medical technologist/ bacteriologist at Carraway Hospital for several years prior to becoming a wonderful homemaker and a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Raised in the Baptist church, Mary became a member of the Episcopal church when she married and was very active at Church of the Ascension in Vestavia Hills and St. Francis in Indian Springs. Later in life, she enjoyed worshipping with her youngest daughter at Church of the Highlands Grants Mill Campus where she became a member and was involved in Small Groups and serving. She was active in the Indian Springs Garden Club, the Horticulture Garden Club, and the Fern Society with amazing gardeners and plant experts. She excelled at gardening, sewing, and creating delicious meals throughout her life. Her children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and beloved pets were a source of great delight. She will be remembered for her steadfast faith in Jesus, her love of God's creation, her amazing caramel cakes, and her award-winning orchids. She liked to say that “God just takes good care of me.” All who knew her would agree, and her family receives that same assurance that God takes good care of our family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Margaret Bowman King of Huntsville, Elizabeth Bowman Cooper (Chuck) of Harrisonburg, Virginia and Mary Haskins Bowman of Indian Springs. Her grandchildren include Mary Carolyn King Last (Peter), Jackson Cooper (Emily), Leonard King, Samuel Cooper (Julianne), and Claire King. Her great-granddaughter is Amy Cooper. She is also survived by her younger brother, James Stallworth (Louise), her sister-in-law, Norene Stallworth, many wonderful nieces and nephews, close friends, and her beloved pets. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her older brother, William Stallworth (Norene).
The graveside service will be held on May 26, 2020 at 1:00PM at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, AL, and a Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 pm at Church of the Highlands Chapel at the Grants Mill location. Due to COVID-19 precautions, social distancing will be observed and masks are encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary’s memory to Springboard Landings at springboardlandings.org, Birmingham Zoo’s Emergency Animal Fund, or Sacred Road Ministries at sacredroadministries.com. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for the Bowman family may be shared at www.southernheritagefunerals.com.

A Celebration of Life

I have so many special memories of my Cousin Mary - my favorites were getting to see her and my cousins yearly at Thanksgiving when the entire family gathered at my Great Aunt Margaret's Canoe, AL house (with Uncle Jack and the "pug"). My family looked forward to eating her "famous" caramel cake at those gatherings (they still talk about her and her delicious cake). Mary and Mary Haskins were at my twin girls' 1st birthday party, and every one that followed. In March, I was able to share some wildflowers I picked on a walk and she immediately texted me the names. She shared some family history with me. I treasure the time I was able to spend with this beautiful, sweet Lady, and I look forward to talking to Mary in heaven one day about her love for flowers and family history. You will be missed, dear Cousin.
