Monroe C. Smith

October 28, 1923 - November 29, 2013

"Buddy" was age 90. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Gary Hudson, and two grandsons, Heath and Trace Hudson. Preceding Buddy in death were his best friend and loving wife of 46 years, Betty. He was also predeceased by his granddaughter, Grace Hudson.

Buddy was born with five siblings. He grew up in the Birmingham, Alabama community of Eastlake and graduated from Woodlawn High School. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1951, and later served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot, retiring with the rank of Commander. He also retired from Southern Company Services, where he worked as an architect.

Buddy enjoyed water skiing, entertaining, and teaching others to ski at Bluff Creek on the Warrior River. He also spent time playing golf with friends at Vestavia Country Club. He especially loved traveling and square dancing with his sweet Betty. He was a caring and loving husband and father, and he loved being GrandBuddy to his two grandsons.

Visitation will be Monday, December 2, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. The graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. Monday at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
