On the morning of August 12, 2025, our family lost a loving father, grandfather, and friend when Murrey Benard Vedel, Sr. passed away peacefully in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by those who loved him most. He was 86.
Murrey’s life was one built on love, hard work, and laughter. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 55 years, Dolores, with whom he built a family filled with memories, traditions, and plenty of good stories. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter Cheryl, son Murrey Jr., and son Greg with wife Lesley. His five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter will carry forward his warmth, humor, and gentle wisdom.
A skilled dental technician, Murrey worked alongside his brother George for many years. Outside the lab, his happiest moments were spent fishing, hunting, tending his garden, watching the birds from his porch, or cheering on his beloved Bama football team. He was a proud member of the Optimist Club in Homewood, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh with friends old and new.
Murrey’s greatest joy came from the people in his life—family, friends, and the many who were fortunate enough to cross his path. He lived fully, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and connection.
The family will greet friends from 2:00–3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. A graveside service will follow immediately.
